Volleyball’s Comeback Bid Stalls in Fifth Set at Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. - Embry-Riddle Volleyball attempted to perform a reverse sweep against Rollins at the Warden Arena on Tuesday night, but a fifth-set surge by the Tars foiled the Eagles' comeback attempt.

After taking sets three and four, Embry-Riddle was poised to steal the win as the Eagles went up 4-0 early on in set five. However, Rollins outscored ERAU 15-6 the rest of the way.

  • The loss ended the Eagles' 14-match winning streak over the Tars, a streak that dated back to 2017

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • The Eagles started well with a 5-1 run to open play
  • Later up 10-7, Rollins mounted a charge with four-straight unanswered points to swipe the lead, 11-10
  • Embry-Riddle kept it close, trailing by just one (21-20) when the Tars took four of the final five rallies to take set one 25-21
Second Set
  • Three-consecutive attacking errors by ERAU had the Eagles behind 9-8
  • Soon after, the Eagles produced their own three-point streak with two kills and an ace to gather a two-point lead (12-10)
  • From there, Rollins outscored Embry-Riddle 7-2 as the Blue and Gold stopped play down 16-14 and later 17-14
  • The break worked as the Eagles turned the deficit into a 22-20 lead partially thanks to three kills and a block from Stella Weisbrod
  • Two service errors from RC brought ERAU to a 24-22 set point but back-to-back kills from the home side leveled the score
  • Weisbrod put her squad back on top with a successful spike, but the Tars took the final three tallies to lead two sets to none with a 27-25 set win
Third Set
  • The Eagles were determined to get back into the match with an 8-2 streak with kills from four different members of the Blue and Gold to launch ahead 10-5
  • The lead continued to grow and reached a maximum of seven points (17-10) after a 5-1 spurt that included back-to-back rejections from Kailey Hrbek
  • Later up 23-19, Rollins gave Embry-Riddle a scare as it tied the set with four points in a row
  • Fortunately, Isabella Rujano turned away a Tars attack and then spiked the ball down to Rollins' side of the court to help ERAU come away with the set, 25-23
Fourth Set
  • Similar to set three, the Eagles used a lengthy six-point run that included four Rollins miscues to yet again lead 10-5
  • A four-point streak later pushed Embry-Riddle's advantage to eight points (17-9)
  • It was smooth sailing from there as the Eagles cruised to a 25-18 set win
Fifth Set
  • Embry-Riddle came out firing in the fifth as it took the first four points of the set, beginning with a kill and block from Fifi Harvey
  • An early timeout by Rollins allowed the Tars to regroup and go on their own four-point run
  • With Embry-Riddle ahead 9-8, RC shocked the Eagles by claiming seven of the last eight rallies to take the decisive set, 15-10
