Volleyball’s Serving Woes Lead to 3-1 Loss to Florida Tech

MELBOURNE, Fla. - The second installment of the Kármán Clash rivalry went to Florida Tech as Embry-Riddle Volleyball came up short to the Panthers in a 3-1 loss. The Eagles struggled to get going from the serving line as ERAU recorded 12 service errors, though Ashlyn Koerner was the exception as the setter produced a career-best five aces. On a positive note, Embry-Riddle did set a season high for blocks in a four-set match with 10 rejections.

RECORDS

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • Embry-Riddle leads the all-time series 20-18
  • The Eagles are 8-12 at the Panthers
  • The loss interrupted ERAU's seven-match winning streak on Florida Tech's home court which dated back to 2017
  • Since becoming a full-time NCAA II member in 2017, ERAU is 14-3 when facing FT
  • This was the first time the Panthers took the season series since 2001

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • Embry-Riddle got on the board with a couple of service errors from Florida Tech
  • The next four points were a result of kills with a pair of successful spikes from Haley Manjack (6-6)
  • After the Panthers grabbed the next point, the Eagles scored five unanswered tallies to give the Blue and Gold a four-point lead (11-7)
  • However, FT took seven of the next nine rallies to steal the lead, 14-13
  • Embry-Riddle was behind by five late in the set (23-18), but the Eagles attempted to make a comeback with a 5-1 streak to make it 24-23, but Florida Tech took the final point with a kill
  • Dakota Zieman was a threat offensively as the freshman produced six of the team's 13 kills in the set
Second Set
  • Set two was a different story as the Eagles jumped ahead 6-2 with three kills from Isabella Rujano
  • That was the theme for the set as Rujano produced 10 kills in the set
  • The Panthers hastily responded to tie it at 6-6
  • Later in the set, Rujano amassed four kills during a 6-1 spurt to send Embry-Riddle back on top, 22-16
  • The set was seemingly in hand at 24-17 when FT fought off four-straight set points to get within three (24-21)
  • Out of the timeout, Zieman came up with the set-clinching kill
Third Set
  • Five miscues by ERAU had FT up 8-5 to start set three
  • The Eagles erased the deficit and eventually took the lead from back-to-back blocks by Koerner and Manjack (14-13)
  • From there, the Panthers captured five of the next six points from three kills and two opposing errors
  • Eventually, the home side took the set 25-19
Fourth Set
  • Kailey Hrbek was a menace at the net by blocking four attacks from the Panthers
  • Each side produced a 4-0 run to begin set four
  • A pair of Zieman kills and Panther attacking errors gave the Eagles the lead before two-straight aces capped off Florida Tech's own scoring run
  • After that, both teams notched 3-0 streaks to tie the set 7-7
  • Koerner registered two-consecutive aces, her fourth and fifth of the match, to orchestrate a 3-0 streak to lead 14-12 and force the home team to take a timeout
  • Florida Tech emerged from the break with three kills from the SSC's leader in kills per set Cordelia Kerns and a 6-1 spurt (18-15, FT)
  • Though the Eagles did immediately tie it from a trio of errors by the Panthers, Florida Tech eventually closed out the set 25-21 and the match

INSIDE THE STATS
