No. 13 Women’s Basketball Finishes Holiday Classic with 70-57 Win Over Davenport

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Embry-Riddle women's basketball nearly led from start to finish on Friday afternoon against Davenport, leading by as much as 18 and holding the lead for over 35 minutes. Kailey Turpening contributed a season high 20 points in addition to her six assists, while Eliana Sheplee recorded her third double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Of their 70 total points, ERAU scored 29 points off of the 19 turnovers they forced from the Panthers.

GAME NOTES
  • The Eagles moved up a spot to No. 13 in the nation in the most recent WBCA Coaches' Poll (Dec. 17).
  • This was the second ever meeting between Embry-Riddle and Davenport, with the Eagles winning the matchup in 2022 by a score of 76-70.
  • ERAU finishes non-conference play with a 5-1 record, while holding a 2-1 record in the opening part of the SSC season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • Davenport knocked down their first two shots, taking a 5-2 lead in the opening minute.
  • With the score tied at 7-7, back-to-back buckets by Sheplee started a 10-2 run, seeing the Eagles finish the period with a 17-9 lead.
  • Sheplee was the only player to stay on the court for the entire quarter and had 11 points by the end of opening ten minutes.
  • The Panthers went 3-for-13 in the quarter, shooting just .231 from the field.
Second Quarter
  • Turpening added five points and two assists in the second quarter. Two of her points came on free throws after a technical foul against the Panthers. 
  • After Nevaeh Williams hit a three to put Davenport ahead 23-22, the technical foul and ensuing possession put Embry-Riddle back in front 26-23 less than 20 seconds later.
  • ERAU and the Panthers went back and forth for the remainder of the half, with the Blue and Gold having a 33-29 lead after 20 minutes.
Third Quarter
  • Coming out of the break, the Blue and Gold started the half on a 14-0 run. They did not giving up a point for the opening five minutes of the quarter.
  • As they have done all season, Embry-Riddle won the battle in the paint. 16 of their 18 points came within the paint in the quarter.
  • Laurie Satchell scored the final four points of the quarter for ERAU, with her team up by a dozen heading in to the final quarter of the game.
Fourth Quarter
  • The Panthers scored the first four points of the quarter, cutting the Eagles' lead down to eight, but they never got closer than that.
  • Turpening had nine additional points in the fourth quarter, getting more free throws after a second technical foul was assessed to Williams. 
  • Four consecutive free throws from the senior put ERAU up by 17 with only 90 seconds left. 
INSIDE THE STATS
  • Kailey Turpening is shooting .964 from the free throw line, which puts her at the second in the country in free throw percentage. Turpening also ranks 5th in the country in assists per game.
  • The 19 field goal attempts by Eliana Sheplee are the most by an ERAU player this season.
  • Laurie Satchell leads the SSC in field goal percentage (.618), which also ranks her as eighth in the country in that category. 
UP NEXT
The Eagles will have nearly two weeks off, before they finish 2025 with a New Year's Eve game against Florida Tech. That game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. tipoff in Melbourne, Florida. Embry-Riddle has a 2-1 record in the SSC, while the Panthers have started the conference season 1-3.
