No. 9 Women’s Basketball Drops 65-57 Contest in Battle of Top Ranked Teams

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After leading for the entire first half, No. 9 Embry-Riddle women's basketball went cold near the end of the game and couldn't overcome No. 11 Nova Southeastern. The matchup between two of the best teams in the country, let alone the SSC, lived up to all expectations. Neither team led by more than 10 points the entire contest, which saw 10 ties and 7 lead changes throughout the afternoon. Eliana Sheplee and Mary Lengemann led the way for the Eagles, recording nearly 60% of the team's made field goals in the game.

RECORDS:

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • As has been the case many times this season, Embry-Riddle got off to a quick start, leading the game 9-1. Kailey Turpening added in five points in the first three minutes.
  • With the Eagles ahead 17-8, Nova Southeastern went on a 9-0 run with three consecutive 3-pointers over the next two minutes to tie the game.
  • Sheplee filled up the stat sheet the opening frame, picking up a point, rebound, assist, and a steal, including the last point of the quarter to put ERAU ahead 18-17.
Second Quarter
  • Embry-Riddle recorded another pair of early buckets to start the quarter, pushing their lead to 22-17, but struggled against the Sharks' full-court press soon after.
  • The Sharks forced eight turnovers in the 2nd quarter, while recording 24 points off turnovers overall in the game.
  • That aggression also led to 10 fouls in the quarter against Nova, which let the Eagles score their last nine points of the quarter from the free throw line, taking a 34-32 lead into the break.
Third Quarter
  • After battling foul trouble in the first half, Sheplee came out firing to begin the second. The Wisconsin native scored half of her 16 points in just the third quarter, going a perfect 4-for-4.
  • Nova Southeastern took their first lead of the game halfway through the quarter, leading 40-38 after a McCann jumper.
  • Embry-Riddle was able to get to the basket consistently in the quarter, as 75% of their 3rd quarter points came from in the paint, and all 16 points coming from inside the three point line.
Fourth Quarter
  • The Eagles started the quarter with a 50-48 lead, but only had two made field goals in the quarter.
  • After a layup by Lengemann, Embry-Riddle only trailed 57-54 with 5:45 to go, but went scoreless for nearly five minutes and NSU was able to push their lead up to nine with less than a minute left.
  • With time starting to run out and ERAU looking for a way back in to the game, each shot in they took in the last three minutes came from deep, but the team went 0-4, only managing to sink three free throws after Turpening was fouled on a shot.
INSIDE THE STATS
  • With it being a tight game throughout, ERAU only used seven players this afternoon, having each of them play at least 24 minutes.
  • The Eagles held Nova Southeastern to a season-low 65 points and its lowest shooting percentage of the year (.343).
  • Sheplee has scored 11 or more points in every game this season, with her season average now at an SSC-leading 18.7.

UP NEXT
The Eagles will take a week off as they prepare to take finals before resuming SSC action when they host Barry University. That game is currently scheduled for a 2 p.m. tipoff on Saturday, December 13, at the ICI Center. The Buccaneers will enter the contest at 3-6, but are coming off their first conference win of the season, beating Palm Beach Atlantic 69-55.
