Softball Slugs Its Way to Sweep of Saints

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A total of 15 runs and 21 hits helped the Embry-Riddle softball team sweep a season-opening doubleheader against Flagler on Saturday, winning 6-5 and 9-2. Junior Shelby Morse was a menace in the batter's box, going 4-for-8 with one run and five RBI. All 22 Eagles on the roster saw the field at one point during the doubleheader. Mattea Martin and Parker Ray both earned their first collegiate starts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Raissa Bianco and Emma Wood showed midseason form in the field as the two Eagles turned a 4-3 double play in the bottom of the first.
  • Embry-Riddle struck first when Bianco slapped an RBI double off the left field wall and Mallory Kinahan followed with an RBI single to the shortstop in the third.
  • A two-run blast in the fourth by Morse propelled the Eagles up 4-0.
  • Flagler got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the inning.
  • Morse delivered again with a two-RBI base knock in the fifth (6-1).
  • A home run by Flagler brought the Saints closer (6-3) in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Three hits in the sixth allowed Flagler to tack on two more runs (6-5).
  • Ray preserved the lead by nailing a runner at home to end the inning, with a successful tag applied by Katriana Bain.
  • Delaney Morgan ended the game by making a spectacular on-the-run catch at the center field fence in the bottom of the seventh.

  • Most of the success came from the top half of the order, as the first four Blue and Gold batters combined to go 8-for-16 with five runs and six RBI.
  • Freshman Larisa Sol Tinajero earned a save in her first collegiate appearance.
  • Morse's four RBI were a single-game career high.
  • Ava Domenici picked up the win after pitching 4.2 innings with three earned runs allowed and a strikeout

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Starting pitcher Morse and the Eagles defense settled in by retiring eight straight batters after a one-out single in the first.
  • The flood gates opened in the second as ERAU plated seven runs, highlighted by a bases-clearing double from Isabelle Bonn. 
  • Morse picked up her fifth RBI of the afternoon with an RBI single through the left side in the fourth (8-0).
  • Flagler responded by putting the first three batters on base in the bottom of the inning and eventually scored a run.
  • Embry-Riddle once again threatened to trigger the mercy rule in the sixth when Vanessa Gilbert brought Kerry O'Sullivan in on a sac fly to left center (9-1).
  • However, the Saints used two singles in the next half inning to make it a seven-run deficit (9-2).
