Softball Stays Undefeated After Day One of Eagle Classic; Shocks No. 6 AUM 8-4

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- It was a perfect start to the Eagle Classic as the Embry-Riddle softball team went 2-0 on Friday, beating Newberry 6-2 and then upsetting No. 6 Auburn-Montgomery 8-4. The Eagles are off to the program's best start in its NCAA II era and its second best start in program history, trailing only a 6-0 start in 2016.

Embry-Riddle has excelled offensively so far this season, hitting .366 as a team and outscoring opponents 29-13.

Game 1 | Embry-Riddle - 6, Newberry - 2

Newberry | 1-5

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • The all-time series is tied at 2-2.

  • The six runs were a series-high for the Eagles.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Shelby Morse settled in, keeping the Wolves hitless in the first two innings.
  • That allowed the Eagles to strike first with two runs in the first. Raissa Bianco scored all the way from second on a bunt single by Mallory Kinahan. She later came home after Newberry's catcher misplayed a throw from right field.
  • After two singles in the third, the Eagles' Morse put a ball in play to bring Bianco back around to score (3-0 ERAU).
  • Two errors and two walks allowed the Wolves to plate their first run of the game in the sixth.
  • Embry-Riddle started a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning. Aspyn Beattie produced a single and then scored on a defensive miscue by the first baseman.
  • Bianco capped off the scoring for the Blue and Gold with a two-RBI single to right (6-1, ERAU).
  • Newberry added a run in the seventh with an RBI double.

Game 2 | Embry-Riddle - 8, No. 6 Auburn-Montgomery - 4

RECORDS
Embry-Riddle | 4-0
No. 6 Auburn-Montgomery | 2-2

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • Auburn-Montgomery leads 5-3.
  • Embry-Riddle is 2-1 all-time at home against AUM.
  • ERAU has won three of the last four meetings.
  • Each of those wins came while the Warhwaks were ranked No. 14 or better.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Again, ERAU's defense was in top form to start, keeping the Warhawks without a hit in the first three innings.
  • Just like in the first game of the day, Embry-Riddle struck first in the second inning when Wood sailed a pitch out to left field. The fielder lost the ball in the sun, which allowed it to drop and Bianco to score.
  • A pair of walks and stolen bases put two Warhawks in scoring position with one out. A ground ball to short brought a runner in to tie the game in the top of the third.
  • Kinahan, Delaney Morgan and Emma Wood all reached base to start the bottom half of the inning. Back-to-back two-RBI doubles from Isabelle Bonn and Kelsey Kressler put ERAU ahead 5-1.
  • Kressler later touched home on an error by the catcher.
  • A couple of defensive misplays caused AUM to add two to their run total in the fourth (6-3, ERAU).
  • Two-straight bases on balls issued to Kinahan and Morgan started the bottom of the frame. Wood singled up the middle to drive in a run, and Leah Oberkehr followed with an RBI groundout (8-3, ERAU).
  • Kressler turned a beautiful double play in the fifth as the senior snagged a line drive out of the air and hastily tossed the ball to first to get the runner out.
  • However, a walk and two singles pushed a runner home for Auburn-Montgomery (8-4, ERAU).
