Eagle-Filled First Day Has Gear, Scialanga in Top 10 for Men’s Golf at Matlock Collegiate Classic

LAKELAND, Fla. - There was no winter-break rust for Ryan Gear and Edoardo Scialanga as the two Eagles found themselves inside the Top 10 following the first day of the Matlock Collegiate Classic hosted by Florida Southern. As a team, Embry-Riddle is in eighth place, just five shots back of third.

  • The Eagles were in a tie for fifth after the first round.
  • ERAU is tied for the third-best stroke average on par-3s (3.33).
  • Embry-Riddle is nine under par on par-5s.
  • The Eagles lead the field in, quite fittingly, eagles as ERAU is responsible for five of the 18 eagles recorded on day one.
  • Embry-Riddle is eyeing its best-ever finish in this tournament, which is currently 10th during the 2022-23 season.

Ryan Gear (71-67=138) | T-4th
  • Gear produced a strong stretch of play in round one from his eighth through his 15th holes. He went four under par during that stretch.
  • His 67 in round two was a career best and made Gear just the 16th Eagle in program history to shoot a 67 or better.
  • Gear was responsible for three of the team's five eagles. Two came in a four-hole span in round two.
  • Gear is tied for the best average on par-4s (3.75).

Edoardo Scialanga (71-69=140) | T-6th 
  • Scialanga played well to close out his first round by recording one birdie and six pars in the final seven holes. 
  • His 69 in round two was his second sub-70 score of the season.
  • Scialanga concluded round two by birdieing three of the last four holes.
  • He is tied for the second-best average on par-3s (3.13).
  • The sophomore is also tied for the sixth-lowest average on par-4s (3.90).
  • Scialanga recorded a team-high seven birdies on day one.

Ian Ball (73-78=151) | T-58th 
  • Similar to Scialanga, Ball ended round one on a positive note with one birdie and seven pars in the last eight holes.
  • In round two, Ball birdied three consecutive holes - his sixth through eighth.
  • Ball produced the second-best average on par-3s (3.00).

Tiago Barni (75-77=152) | T-62nd
  • Barni started his second round well with birdies on two of the opening four holes. 
  • He was two under par on par-5s.

Aleksandar Abrashev (79-78=157) | T-74th 
  • This is Abrashev's first appearance of the season.
  • He began round one at two under par just three holes in, partly thanks to an eagle on his second hole, which was a par four at 367 yards.
  • Abrashev also was two under par on par-5s.
