Resilient Eagles Hang With Barry But Fall 5-4 in Nine-Inning Affair

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Embry-Riddle softball erased three deficits in the series-opener against Barry on Friday, but the Buccaneers prevailed in nine innings by a score of 5-4. Despite this, the Eagles did outhit Barry 12-11. Katriana Bain came off the bench to go 2-for-2, while Mallory Kinahan, who also made a relief appearance, led the team in hits with three over four at-bats.

Barry | 9-5, 3-1 SSC (T-2nd)

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • Embry-Riddle leads the all-time series 14-11.
  • The Eagles are 6-4 at home.
  • This was just the second extra-inning game in series history.
  • ERAU has won the last two three-game series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
2nd Inning
  • Barry scored in four of the first six innings, beginning with a sacrifice fly in the top of the second.
  • The Eagles mimicked the Buccaneers as Emma Wood doubled to left with one out, and Isabelle Bonn brought her in with a sac fly to left.
3rd Inning
  • A walk, single, and hit batter loaded the bases with no outs for Barry.
  • Raissa Bianco turned a 4-3 double play when the next batter sent a grounder to the senior, who tagged the runner sprinting toward second and threw to Wood on first.
  • However, a run still scored on that play.
4th Inning
  • The Buccaneers stretched their lead to 3-1 with a leadoff homer in the next inning.
5th Inning
  • The Eagles fought back, starting with back-to-back singles from Kelsey Kressler and Kinahan.
  • Kerry O'Sullivan slapped a pitch up the middle underneath the pitcher's glove to drive in a run.
  • Delaney Morgan then tied the game with an RBI groundout.
6th Inning
  • A triple by the visitors once again sent Barry ahead, this time 4-3.
  • In the bottom of the inning, Bain stepped in to pinch hit and came up clutch with a single to center.
  • The center fielder overran the ball, allowing it to escape past her and letting Leah Oberkehr tie the game yet again.
9th Inning
  • In a relief performance, Kinahan did well to limit Barry to just one run and three hits from the fifth inning until the eight frame.
  • A two-out walk came back to bite the Blue and Gold as the runner stole second and narrowly beat a throw home by Morgan to score on a single (5-4, BU).
  • Bain, Kressler and Kinahan tallied base knocks to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth.
  • However, two straight ground balls back to the pitcher led to force outs at home, and a pop out to short ended the game.
