Softball Drops Doubleheader to Buccaneers

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Saturday was a struggle for Embry-Riddle Softball as the Eagles dropped both games of a doubleheader to Barry by scores of 10-2 and 9-4.

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • Embry-Riddle leads the all-time series 14-13.
  • The Eagles are 6-6 at home.
  • This is the first time Barry swept a three-game series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Inning
  • A hit-by-pitch, walk, and throwing error from a wild pitch led to Barry scoring the first run of the game. 
2nd Inning
  • The Eagles then took advantage of a Buccaneers' miscue as Gianna Domenici reached base. 
  • A passed ball moved pinch runner Serenity Jaenichen over to second before Kerry O'Sullivan produced a single.
  • O'Sullivan attempted to steal second and drew the throw down, which allowed Jaenichen to score the tying run before O'Sullivan was tagged out. 
3rd Inning
  • Katriana Bain flexed her muscles by nailing a runner attempting to steal second.
  • However, an error and three-straight hits broke the tie with four runs for the Buccaneers (5-1, BU)
4th Inning
  • Mattea Martin swung at the first pitch of the inning and lifted the ball over the right field fence for her second home run of the season (5-2, BU).
5th Inning
  • Barry added another five runs off of three hits, two errors and a walk to send the Eagles behind 10-2.

INSIDE THE STATS
  • O'Sullivan (10) and Oberkehr (8) lengthened their hitting streaks.
  • Nine of the 10 runs allowed by ERAU were unearned.

Game 2 | Barry - 9, Embry-Riddle - 4

HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Inning
  • The runs came quick as both teams combined for seven runs in the opening frame.
  • Barry used three hits to bring three Buccaneers in to score. 
  • The Eagles responded by scoring four times before an out was recorded.
  • Mallory Kinahan and Leah Oberkehr singled to start the inning.
  • The Buccaneers' catcher sailed a throw into the outfield to allowed Oberkehr to easily jog home. 
  • Emma Wood then turned a sac bunt into a single while Kinahan sprinted to the plate for a second run. 
  • With two on, Shelby Morse sent a ball to second that went right through a fielder's legs, allowing two runs to score and giving the Eagles their first lead of the series, 4-3.
2nd Inning
  • The visitors produced a six-hit four-run frame to lead 7-4.
4th Inning
  • Kinahan took over in relief inside the circle, holding Barry to just two hits over the next three innings.
  • She and the Eagle defense retired the side in order in two of those frames.
7th Inning
  • An error, triple and sac bunt added two more runs to Barry's lead (9-4).
