Offense Stays Hot in Softball’s Doubleheader Split With Hillsdale

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team produced 13 runs and 17 hits over two games against Hillsdale on Saturday. The Chargers took game one 9-6 in nine innings while the Eagles responded with a 7-4 victory in the nightcap.

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • Embry-Riddle leads the all-time series 5-2.
  • All seven games have come at home.
  • ERAU won the first four meetings while the Chargers took two of the three most recent matchups.

Game 1 | Hillsdale - 9, Embry-Riddle - 6 (9 Inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Inning
  • Embry-Riddle took an early lead in the first inning with a key play by Raissa Bianco, who tripled to right center. 
  • Emma Wood followed with a double to left field, driving in Bianco.
  • The throw by the left fielder sailed wide of third base, landing near the ERAU dugout.
  • No Chargers made an effort to retrieve the ball, allowing Wood to make it a 2-0 game. 
3rd Inning
  • After a scoreless second inning, the Chargers managed to narrow the gap in the third inning. 
  • Sather reached second on a throwing error, and Liguori singled to bring Sather home, making the score 2-1 in favor of Embry-Riddle.
5th Inning
  • The fifth inning saw a flurry of activity from both teams. 
  • HC scored five runs, capitalizing on hits and a wild pitch, to take a 6-2 lead. 
  • Embry-Riddle responded in the bottom of the fifth with three runs.
  • Leah Oberkehr singled to bring in a run, and a sequence of stolen bases and errors allowed two more runs to score, with Bianco's sac fly putting the finishing touch on the inning (6-5, HC).
6th Inning
  • Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs for ERAU.
  • Then with two outs, Mallory Kinahan hustled down the line for a game-tying RBI single to the shortstop.
7th Inning
  • Embry-Riddle stayed sharp defensively by retiring the side in order for the next two innings.
9th Inning
  • In the ninth inning, Hillsdale broke the tie with three additional runs, setting the score at 9-6. 
  • Embry-Riddle put runners in scoring position but was unable to capitalize, concluding the game with a hard-fought effort.

INSIDE THE STATS
  • Oberkehr increased her hit streak to 22 games. 
  • She also improved her stolen base streak to 11 games.
  • The junior's three stolen bases tied the program's single-game record and matched her career high.
  • Oberkehr has 28 stolen bases on the season, which is tied for the most in the Sunshine State Conference and is six away from setting a single-season program record.
  • This was the first time this season Kinahan hit at the top of the order.
  • Wood received her first career loss as a pitcher (11-1), capping off an impressive win streak of 11 games that spanned two-and-a-half seasons.
  • Embry-Riddle pitchers possessed an accurate 73.6 strike percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Inning
  • Embry-Riddle took an early lead in the first inning when Kinahan scored after going from first to home on a throwing error. 
2nd Inning
  • Hillsdale tied the contest with a two-out RBI single.
  • The home team maintained its momentum as Morgan walked, stole second, and advanced to third before scoring on a sacrifice bunt by Isabelle Bonn, bringing the score to 2-1.
3rd Inning
  • Bianco played a large part in retiring the side in order as she successfully fielded all three ground balls in the inning. 
5th Inning
  • In the fifth inning, Embry-Riddle capitalized on a series of successful plays to extend its lead. 
  • Oberkehr's single up the middle brought in two runs, followed by Wood's RBI single. 
  • Back-to-back throwing errors allowed Bianco and Wood to touch home, resulting in a total of five runs in the inning and a 7-1 lead.
6th Inning
  • The Chargers added a run from a two-out double to the center field fence and a fielding error.
7th Inning
  • Hillsdale continued to fight with two more runs in the seventh, but the Eagles held on.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
INSIDE THE STATS
  • Oberkehr increased her hit streak to 23 games.
  • Wood is also riding a lengthy hit streak (10 games).
  • Bianco saw plenty of action in the field with six assists, a career high and the most by an Eagle this season. 
  • It also tied for the eighth-most assists in a game by an Eagle in program history.
  • Kinahan is the fourth different pitcher to earn a save for Embry-Riddle this season.
  • Bonn threw out her tenth runner of the season, which is the most in the SSC.
  • ERAU was a stout 5-for-12 with runners on base.
  • Embry-Riddle pitchers produced a lot of weak contact as 15 of the 21 outs made were groundouts.
