Softball Takes Opener Against Lynn, 5-1

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – In an unusual 'road' series at home, Embry-Riddle Softball took the opening contest against Lynn 5-1 on Friday night. The series was originally scheduled to be held at Lynn, but field maintenance moved the series to Radiology Associates Field. Despite playing in its home ballpark, the Eagles were listed as the road team.

ERAU's lock-down defense continued as the Eagles held their opponent to one run or less for the fourth time in the last six games. From the third inning onward, Embry-Riddle kept the Fighting Knights scoreless and hitless.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Inning
  • A leadoff hit was erased when Isabelle Bonn threw out a runner attempting to steal second.
2nd Inning
  • A walk and a hit had two runners in scoring position for Lynn.
  • Then, a fielder's choice drove in the opening run.
3rd Inning
  • Embry-Riddle immediately responded when a bunt single got Leah Oberkehr on base, and the speedy junior ran all the way to third after the catcher airmailed the throw into right field.
  • That set up Delaney Morgan for an RBI-double to right that dropped out in no-man's land to tie the game.
  • From there, Shelby Morse took over inside the circle, and the Eagles didn't allow a batter to reach base for the rest of the game.
4th Inning
  • Back-to-back walks had two Eagles on base with one out.
  • Vanessa Gilbert produced an RBI-single off the bench to give the Blue and Gold the lead.
  • In the bottom of the inning, Raissa Bianco made an incredible superhero-like catch to rob Lynn of a hit.
5th Inning
  • A ground ball by Bianco forced Oberkehr to score.
  • Bianco then stole second and sprinted home as the throwdown escaped into left field.
6th Inning
  • ERAU added an insurance run when Mattea Martin traveled all the way around the diamond, eventually scoring on a ball put in play by Kerry O'Sullivan.
