Softball Shuts Down Valdosta State in Doubleheader Sweep

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Embry-Riddle Softball's defense was air-tight during the Eagles' 2-1, 3-0 doubleheader sweep of Valdosta State on Tuesday. Starting pitchers Ava Domenici and Shelby Morse, along with the rest of the defense, held the Blazers to one run and five hits over two games.

Game two of the doubleheader was the fourth shutout of the season for Embry-Riddle and tied a season-low in hits allowed (1). That was the lowest hit total in a game for VSU this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Inning 
  • Starting pitcher Domenici was in top form, striking out two of the first five batters faced. 
4th Inning
  • The Eagles did their damage in the fourth, with Raissa Bianco earning a walk and Leah Oberkehr picking up a single to start. 
  • Katriana Bain found some open space in left field to drive in a run, and Delaney Morgan added a second run with her sacrifice bunt.
  • In the bottom of the inning, the Eagles continued their strong defensive play, limiting the home team to just one hit through four innings.
5th Inning
  • The Blazers responded in the fifth with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with no outs.
  • The runner on first baited a throw down to second, allowing the runner on third to score and make it a 2-1 ballgame.
7th Inning
  • VSU managed to put the tying run on second with two outs, but Domenici induced a popup to first to preserve the win.

  • Domenici tossed her first complete game of the season.
  • It was a career-long outing for the junior and a season-high in strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
4th Inning
  • An error allowed Oberkehr to reach base to start the frame, and she moved all the way to third on a sac bunt.
  • Emma Wood then produced a sac fly to left to send the Blue and Gold ahead 1-0.
  • Meanwhile, starting pitcher Morse and company used lock-down defense to keep the Blazers hitless through four innings.
5th Inning
  • A single by Bain paired with a double from Kelsey Kressler helped ERAU add another run to its total.
  • Valdosta State got its only hit of the game in the bottom of the inning.
7th Inning
  • Bain produced again in the seventh with a one-out double and eventually scored on a fielding error by the second baseman to make it 3-0.
  • Morse and the defense retired the side in order in each of the final two innings to complete the shutout.

  • Kressler broke the program record for career assists (292).
  • Bain is on a 10-game hitting streak.
  • The Eagles outhit the Blazers 3-1.
