Volleyball Falters Late in Embry-Riddle Invitational Finale

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Embry-Riddle Volleyball struggled to close out the final match of the Embry-Riddle Invitational on Saturday, falling 3-2 to Lewis. The Eagles held a 23-16 lead in the fourth set while up two sets to one, but the visitors stormed back and stole the next two sets.

Though the match didn't go the Blue and Gold's way, multiple Eagles posted impressive performances. Ashlyn Koerner's 58 assists were a career-best and the most by a Sunshine State Conference student-athlete this year while Gabriela Pagan's 32 digs were the most in a match in her collegiate career and tied for the most by an SSC student-athlete in 2025. Embry-Riddle also recorded a conference-high 71 kills as a team.

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • This was the first-ever meeting

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • Isabella Rujano produced three of the team's first four points to even the score at 4-4
  • Both sides couldn't get more than two points of separation until ERAU scored four straight thanks to a trio of miscues by Lewis to lead 18-15
  • The Flyers battled back by taking the next three points
  • The set continued on with Lewis ahead 25-24
  • Embry-Riddle appeared to tie the score when a spike by Dakota Zieman was deflected high into the air with a trajectory into the grandstands
  • However, the ball was caught in netting hanging from the rafters, and the rally had to be replayed, which ended up being a service error by Lewis
  • The Flyers reached set point at 27-26 when the Eagles took four of the next five points to steal the lengthy set 30-28, which was their 16th-straight set won
Second Set
  • Lewis flew out to a 5-2 lead, and Embry-Riddle's deficit reached a peak of seven points later on (16-9)
  • The Eagles reeled in the visitors with back-to-back kills from Rujano to kickstart a 4-0 run
  • However, the Flyers maintained their distance and took the set 25-19
Third Set
  • Zieman took the Blue and Gold out to a 5-1 start with three kills
  • The Eagles retained the lead for the remainder of the set, winning 25-21
Fourth Set
  • Zieman once again led the charge with six of the Eagles' first 10 points coming from the freshman (10-7)
  • Koerner joined in with back-to-back kills in the middle of a 4-0 run to make the score 19-13
  • With Embry-Riddle up 23-16, Lewis pulled off some late-match theatrics with five-straight points before Rujano brought the Eagles to a potential match point with a kill (24-21)
  • The Flyers eradicated ERAU's lead with a 4-0 spurt to go ahead 25-24
  • Rujano and Fifi Harvey gave the home team hope with two kills to regain the lead 26-25
  • Lewis then took the next three rallies to come from behind and steal the set 28-26
Fifth Set
  • The momentum shifted to the visitors as Lewis emerged out of the break with a 6-3 lead
  • Embry-Riddle stepped up and grabbed four of the next five tallies to tie the set at 7-7
  • At that point, four ERAU errors sent the Flyers ahead 13-9, and Lewis closed out the game with a kill and an ace
