No. 18 Women's Basketball Coasts to 73-59 Win Over Lynn

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Embry-Riddle women's basketball used a dominant second quarter to ease past Lynn on Saturday inside the ICI Center. The Eagles held at least a 10-point lead for the entire second half, after going on a 23-2 run between the first and second quarter. The Blue and Gold shot over .600 in both the 2nd and 3rd quarter to build their lead up to as much as 21 in their 73-59 over the Fighting Knights. ERAU was led by Eliana Sheplee who found herself in the record books again after having 20 field goal attempts and five steals in the game this afternoon. Laurie Satchell pitched in with 16 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double, and the Eagles defense forcing 17 turnovers against Lynn.

  • The Blue and Gold were No. 18 in the nation in the most recent WBCA Coaches' Poll (Jan. 6).

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • Lynn scored 14 points in the first five minutes of the game, starting the game 5-for-6 from the field, ahead 14-7 after the first media timeout.
  • However, the Fighting Knights would not score again for the remainder of the quarter. 
  • Kailey Turpening led the team with six points in the quarter, capping off an 8-0 run with a three that put ERAU in front 15-14.
  • ERAU drew six fouls in the quarter, going 5-for-6 (.833) at the free throw line.
Second Quarter
  • Laurie Satchell scored five points and grabbed three rebounds within the first four minutes of the quarter. 
  • Embry-Riddle got their lead up to as many as 14, outscoring the Fighting Knights 23-2 after the early 14-7 deficit.
  • The Eagles drew four offensive fouls against Lynn in the first half, seeing three different Knights end the half in foul trouble.
  • Eliana Sheplee took full advantage against the Lynn reserves, finishing the half with 14 points and 5 rebounds, including ten points in just the second quarter.
Third Quarter
  • After scoring 21 points in the whole first half, Lynn put up 21 in just the third quarter, but it wasn't enough to cut into the ERAU lead, with the Blue and Gold scoring 24 in the third.
  • Trinity Mocadlo scored the first eight points of the half for Lynn, but there was still no answer for Sheplee, who reached 20 total points in the opening minutes of the third.
  • Embry-Riddle had three different starters score six points in the quarter (Sheplee, Satchell, Lengemann), while Bianca Negreiros and Alyssa Brasko each added a late three off the bench to make it 60-42 with 10 minutes left to play.
Fourth Quarter
  • Satchell added four more points and three rebounds before the game was over, ensuring she finished with a double-double. This was the third double-double of the season for the senior.
  • Embry-Riddle'ls largest lead of the game came when they were up 21 after an and-1 from Sheplee, making it 65-44 with 8:29 to go.
  • ERAU forced 17 turnovers from Lynn, turning those into 25 points, while also adding 40 points in the paint against the Fighting Knights.
INSIDE THE STATS
  • Eliana Sheplee had a season high in both field goal attempts (20) and steals (5), which are each good enough to be a top-10 mark in program history.
  • Embry-Riddle is now 10-0 when they have outrebounded their opponents, winning the battle on the glass, 36-24, this afternoon.
  • ERAU's .455 (5-for-11) three-point shooting percentage was their season-high against an SSC team this season.

The Eagles will head to Lakeland, Florida on Wednesday, January 14, with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff for a matchup against Florida Southern. The Moccasins and Eagles will enter the contest tied for 2nd in the SSC, with both teams 6-1 in conference play so far.
