No. 14 Women’s Basketball Earns Eighth Consecutive Win with 76-66 Victory Over Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. – No. 14 Embry-Riddle women's basketball finished the first half of conference play with a 9-1 record after picking up a 76-66 win over Rollins on Wednesday night. The Eagles' offense erupted in the second and third quarters, scoring 54 of their 76 points during that span. Embry-Riddle outscored Rollins 50-20 in points in the paint and held an 18-8 advantage in bench points. ERAU forced 17 turnovers from the Tars, leading to a 28-point swing after the Eagles trailed by nine before taking a 19-point lead in the fourth quarter. Eliana Sheplee led the Eagles with 28 points, Alyssa Brasko grabbed 10 rebounds, and Kailey Turpening added a game-high seven assists.

GAME NOTES
  • Embry-Riddle rose three spots, up to No. 14 in the nation in the most recent WBCA Coaches' Poll (Jan. 20).
  • The Eagles now lead the all-time series 13-6 over Rollins, winning each of the past five meetings between the teams.
  • Since the start of 2019, ERAU is 11-1 in games against the Tars.
  • Embry-Riddle remains in 2nd place in the SSC. The Eagles are just one game behind Nova Southeastern who is 10-0 in conference play, while also staying one game ahead of third-placed Eckerd.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • The game got started with a layup from Laurie Satchell and a free throw from Mary Lengemann, giving ERAU a 3-2 lead in the early stages.
  • However, Embry-Riddle would go scoreless for the next four minutes, seeing Rollins go on a 10-0 run, leading it 12-3 with 3:30 to go in the opening quarter.
  • Eliana Sheplee cut into the lead with five consecutive points on back-to-back possessions. Each team made a field goal in the final minute, with the Tars holding a 15-10 lead after the first 10 minutes.
  • As a team, the Eagles went 3-for-17 from the field, shooting 1-for-7 from behind the arc.
Second Quarter
  • Embry-Riddle started the quarter on a 15-1 run in a five minute span. By the end of the run, the Eagles were leading 25-16.
  • ERAU was able to score in a variety of different ways in the quarter, hitting a pair of threes and five free throws to go with their 20 points in the paint.
  • Seven different players scored in the quarter for the Blue and Gold, with Sheplee adding 10 points. Anye' Staton had six points, while Maya Collins added five points with a bucket in the first minute and last minute of the period.
  • The 31 points scored in the second quarter were the most that ERAU has scored in any quarter this season. The team went 12-for-16 from the field in the quarter, leading 41-29 at the half.
Third Quarter
  • Coming out of the break, neither team could miss a shot. The two teams combined for 27 points in the first four minutes, with the Tars outscoring the Eagles 15-12.
  • All 10 made field goals by ERAU during the quarter came from inside the paint, with Embry-Riddle registering 50 total points in the paint this evening.
  • After a quick adjustment, the Blue and Gold held Rollins to just one made field goal in the final six minutes of the quarter, extending their lead up to 17 points, 64-47.
Fourth Quarter
  • Jareah Branch gave the Eagles their largest lead of the night, 66-47, with a made jumper on the first possession of the quarter. Branch and Sheplee combined for 10 of Embry-Riddle's 12 points in the final quarter.
  • Rollins would go on to score on seven of their next eight possessions, trimming the ERAU lead down to single digits. With 5:30 left to go, the Eagles led 70-61.
  • However, Sheplee responded with a pair of layups over the next two minutes, seeing the Blue and Gold lead it 74-61 with under four minutes to go.
  • One more field goal from each team ended the game 76-66, with the Eagles now winning by 10 or more points in four of their last five games.

INSIDE THE STATS
  • After being named the national player of the week on Tuesday, Sheplee followed that up with a 28-point outing, bring her average to 23.7 points in the seven games since returning from Christmas Break.
  • Alyssa Brasko grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds this evening, while adding in a pair of assists.  
  • Embry-Riddle is now 13-0 when they have outrebounded their opponents, winning the battle on the glass, 46-27, this afternoon, grabbing 17 offensive rebounds.
UP NEXT
The Eagles will stay on the road, travelling to take on Eckerd on Saturday, January 24. That tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in St. Petersburg. Embry-Riddle earned a hard-fought 70-65 win over the Tritons on January 3 in their first matchup of the season.
