Balanced Effort Leads No. 18 Women’s Basketball To 76-57 Win Against Palm Beach Atlantic

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Embry-Riddle women's basketball had all five starters score at least 10 points on Wednesday evening in their win against Palm Beach Atlantic. The Eagles held a narrow lead throughout the first half, but blew the game open in the third quarter. ERAU dominated the interior against the Sailfish, recording 44 points in the paint, outrebounding PBA by 11, scoring 14 second chance points, and had at least four players get at least one block. Eliana Sheplee led the game with 18 points, while Mary Lengemann recorded a season-high four assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • Mary Lengemann got the Eagles off to a great start, scoring six points in the first five minutes of the game.
  • As a team, ERAU grabbed six offensive rebounds in the first quarter, leading them to outshoot PBA 22-11 in the opening quarter.
  • 16 of the team's 21 points in the first quarter came from inside the paint, with Kailey Turpening also adding a made three.
Second Quarter
  • Embry-Riddle continued to build their lead in the following quarter, shooting .500 from the field (8-for-16), including another trey from Turpening.
  • Six different Eagles recorded a made field goal in the quarter, with Turpening and Bianca Negreiros each adding a pair of field goals. 
  • After eight points in the quarter from Anabel Ellison had cut the ERAU lead to 31-29, the Eagles finished the quarter on a 7-0 run.
  • Aggressive defense from the Blue and Gold forced the Sailfish into 14 turnovers in the first half.
Third Quarter
  • ERAU started the half on a 9-2 run, including five consecutive points from Turpening, who hit a season high three shots from beyond the arc.
  • Back-to-back buckets from Alyssa Brasko finished off an 11-0 run, giving Embry-Riddle their largest lead of the game, up 58-34 with two minutes left in the quarter.
  • Playing nearly the entire third quarter, Jareah Branch added four points and four rebounds, finishing with 10 points, her most in an SSC game this season.
Fourth Quarter
  • After being held relatively quiet in the first three quarters, Eliana Sheplee added eight points in the final frame, including the last six points of the game, finishing with a game-high 18 points.
  • Embry-Riddle's starters closed out the game, with the five starters all recording at least one made field goal, accounting for all 16 points in the quarter.
  • ERAU, the most accurate free throw shooting team in the SSC (.747), lived up to that standard, going 8-for-8 from the charity stripe in the game. 
INSIDE THE STATS
  • Kailey Turpening finished the game with 15 points, 6 rebounds, three treys, and a block. Her six rebounds tied a season high, while she has now made at least one 3FG in four consecutive games.
  • Embry-Riddle is now 9-0 when they have outrebounded their opponents, winning the battle on the glass, 38-27, this evening.
  • ERAU's four blocks were their most since the opening game of the season against Montevallo (6).
UP NEXT
The Eagles will finish their three-game homestand on Saturday, January 10, with a 2 p.m. matchup against Lynn. The Fighting Knights enter the contest with a 10-5 overall record, coming off a 75-65 win over Florida Tech in double overtime on Wednesday evening.
