No. 6 Women’s Lacrosse Drops 19-12 Contest to No. 1 Flagler

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – No. 6 Embry-Riddle women's lacrosse scored nine goals in the second half on Wednesday afternoon, but fell 19-12 in their attempt to upset top-ranked Flagler. The Saints got off to a great start, scoring four woman-up goals in the first half and leading 14-3 at the break. However, ERAU scored two early goals coming out of the break and finished the game on a 6-1 run, refusing to go down without a fight. 

The game also featured significant milestones for the Eagles, as Eliana Enners set a program record. Enners became the program's all-time leading goal scorer with 144 career goals and recorded her 200th career draw control. Caitlin Gavin extended her own program record for caused turnovers with 88 in her career now, including seven this season. Ava Rogala also reached a personal milestone, reaching 100 career points on 77 goals and 23 assists.

  • Embry-Riddle remained at No. 6 for the third consecutive week in the most recent IWLCA Division II national poll (March 16).
  • Flagler now leads the all-time series 3-2 with the teams having played in five consecutive seasons. The home site has alternated each season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • Flagler scored the first two goals of the game, capitalizing on a pair of turnovers by Embry-Riddle. Jessica Wright scored the first and would add an assist on the next goal less than 90 seconds later.
  • After two saves from the Saints goalkeeper, Wright put the Saints up 3-0 with her second goal of the game, with 6:32 left in the quarter.
  • Flagler added another pair of goals just 23 seconds apart, seeing their lead extend to 5-0 with exactly 5:00 remaining in the first period.
  • ERAU would quickly grow into the game as Ava Rogala scored the team's opening goal on a free position shot. Following her goal, the Blue and Gold had consecutive shots go off of the post and then the crossbar.
  • Carley Tepel responded with a free position goal of her own to restore the Saints' lead at 6-1 as we headed to the second quarter.
Second Quarter
  • Another foul against Flagler gave the Eagles another free position opportunity, with Callison Foreman the next player to capitalize on her chance from eight meters out to make it 6-2 in the opening minute.
  • The Saints answered with a goal on their next possession, followed by a free position goal from Wright, as she finished her hat trick with 10:58 to go in the half.
  • A green card on the ensuing draw against ERAU put the Crimson and Gold a woman-up, finding their ninth goal of the game through Ava Lambros.
  • Mia Cosentino found the back of the net once more for the Saints, but Aubrey Schmidt had an immediate reply, controlling the draw and then scoring the goal herself to bring the score back to 10-3 with 7:21 left in the quarter.
  • Fouls would come back to haunt the Eagles in the final four minutes of the half with Flagler scoring four goals in the closing stages either a woman-up or from a free position shot. ERAU was called for eight fouls in the quarter, giving up five shots from eight meters out along with conceding four goals in the quarter while a woman-down.
Third Quarter
  • Coming out of halftime, the Blue and Gold scored two of the first three goals, hoping to start a comeback effort. Caitlin Gavin found the back of the net on a free position shot to make the game 15-4 with 11:39 left.
  • With a running clock while Flagler was up by 10 or more, the Eagles were quick to get the game restarted and Foreman grabbed another goal for ERAU at 9:36.
  • The Saints and Embry-Riddle each scored a woman-up goal in the following minutes, putting the score at 16-6 heading into the final minute of the third quarter.
  • A free position goal from Flagler concluded the quarter, with the two teams combining to go 8-for-11 from eight meters out, but there would not be any opportunities for more in the final 15 minutes.
Fourth Quarter
  • Wright picked up her fifth point of the afternoon when she assisted the opening goal of the quarter for the Saints in the first 30 seconds, but Flagler would not score again for the next 13 minutes.
  • Enners scored her first of three goals in the quarter at 12:05, which made the score 18-7. This was the goal that broke the ERAU program record, the 142nd goal of her career.
  • Rogala picked up a goal and an assist less than a minute apart when she was assisted by Foreman before reversing roles for the next goal, enough to make the game 18-9.
  • Natalie Jansky got the Eagles to double-digits when she scored the Blue and Gold's seventh goal of the half. With 7:50 left to play, Embry-Riddle only trailed 18-10.
  • After a scoreless first half for the junior, Enners completed her hat trick with 6:17 remaining. After their five unanswered goals in five minutes, ERAU took a timeout looking to regroup for one final push.
  • The Blue and Gold won the ensuing draw, but Capolino made her ninth save of the game and Flagler sealed the game with a goal to lead 19-11 and just a minute remaining.
  • Enners scored the final goal of the game with 17 seconds left off of an assist by Natalie Jansky, giving us our 19-12 final score.

  • The 12 goals that the Eagles scored this afternoon are the most the Saints have given up in a game this season.
  • Callison Foreman has had 5 or more points in three consecutive games, leading the team with 26 this season.

UP NEXT
The Eagles will finish the week on Saturday with their fourth consecutive home game when they host Quincy. The Hawks played at ERAU Lacrosse Field in a neutral site game on Monday evening, losing to Saint Anselm. Quincy will return to play against Embry-Riddle on Saturday, March 21, at 12 PM.
