No. 5 Women’s Lacrosse Drop 10-5 Defensive Battle to No. 2 Florida Southern

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Goals were hard to come by in a low scoring game on Wednesday afternoon between two of the top five teams in the country. Embry-Riddle had tied the game 5-5 in the second quarter but were held scoreless in the second half as Florida Southern prevailed with a 10-5 win. Three free-position goals plus a pair of man-up goals for the Mocs was the difference as the two goalies combined for 18 saves to keep their respective teams in the competitive contest. The Blue and Gold were led by Jordan Davis who scored a pair of goals including the goal that drew the contest even at 5-5.

GAME NOTES
  • Embry-Riddle remained at No. 5 in the most recent IWLCA Division II national poll (March 30).
  • The Moccasins now lead the all-time series 8-1 against the Eagles, with ERAU's last win coming at home in April 2022.
  • Neither team has scored more than 13 goals in a game in any of the last four matchups between the schools.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • Embry-Riddle fell behind 1-0 to start the game after a failed clear was capitalized on by Florida Southern with Hanna Watson scoring the opening goal. The Eagles went 12-for-12 on clears for the remainder of the game.
  • A foul against ERAU gave FSC a free-position shot which was scored by Jenna Vetter to put her team ahead 2-0 at 8:49.
  • Ella-Rae Cox made back-to-back saves following the goal, including a save on a second free-position shot. However, Riley Rivera provided her second assist of the day to extend the Mocassins lead.
  • Rivera had a point on three of the first four goals for FSC when she scored a goal from eight meters out after another free-position opportunity.
  • The Eagles controlled four of the five draws but were denied by a pair of saves in the quarter from Florida Southern, trailing 4-0 at the end of the quarter.
Second Quarter
  • Ava Rogala looked to lead a comeback for the Blue and Gold as she scored the team's first goal of the day inside the first 30 seconds of the quarter off of an assist from Natalie Jansky.
  • Rogala then hit the post with her next shot on the ensuing possession, but after collecting the rebound, Jansky provided a second assist to Jordan Davis at 13:26.
  • The goals continued to come for Embry-Riddle as they had their third of the quarter when Ashley Albert scored with 11:14 left to play.
  • Florida Southern momentarily stayed in front when they scored to make it 5-3 at 8:31.
  • Following a caused turnover from Lucy Pickle, Jansky brought the Eagles back within one when she scored her first goal after dishing out a pair of assists.
  • Davis helped complete the comeback for ERAU, scoring the team's fifth goal in the first 10 minutes of the quarter. The assist came from Callison Foreman who has now provided a helper in 10 of 11 games this season.
  • The last goal of the half came from Florida Southern, seeing this top-five matchup head into the break with the Mocs ahead 6-5.
Third Quarter
  • Florida Southern scored with the first shot of the half, now leading it 7-5 with 13:54 on the clock.
  • Neither team scored for the next eight minutes as Rebekah Bargeron made another save, denying Eliana Enners who was in search of a team-high 41st goal of the campaign.
  • The only other goal of the quarter came off of a free-position shot from Riley Rivera who went 2-for-3 from eight meters out. The two goalies combined for 12 saves in the second half while only four goals were scored after the intermission.
Fourth Quarter
  • Another save from Bargeron led to a transition opportunity for the Mocs as they made the game 9-5 after their successful clear.
  • Embry-Riddle's first free position opportunity came with 9:23 on the clock but Enners was denied before Jenna Vetter finished her hat trick at 8:03. 
  • ERAU had 11 shots on goal compared to 14 for Florida Southern with each team putting at least two shots on target in each quarter. Both teams took great care of the ball, going 25-for-25 on clears in the last 50 minutes of the game.

INSIDE THE STATS
  • The Eagles are giving up less than 10 goals per game, only conceding 9.6 per contest.
  • ERAU ranks 2nd in the SSC with an average of 18.82 ground balls per game.
  • Natalie Jansky and Ava Rogala have scored in every game so far this season. Rogala has found the back of the net on 25 occasions while Jansky has 15 goals and 24 assists.

UP NEXT
The Eagles will play in another top-five matchup on Saturday, April 4, at 1:00 p.m when they travel to face No. 4 Lynn. The Fighting Knights currently have an 8-3 record and are tied with ERAU with a 2-1 record in conference play.
