RV Men’s Lacrosse Falls Short In 15-12 Loss to No. 16 Saint Leo on Senior Day

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – RV Embry-Riddle men's lacrosse honored eight seniors before Saturday afternoon's contest, with all eight players seeing action during the game. The teams combined for nine goals in the first quarter and continued to trade goals throughout, as the 27 total goals were the second most scored in an SSC game this season. ERAU and Saint Leo were tied 7-7 but after a 4-0 run from the Lions, the Eagles were unable to overcome the deficit and eventually dropped the game, 15-12.

  • Embry-Riddle was receiving votes in the most recent USILA Division II Poll (April 6).
  • Saint Leo now leads the all-time series 5-3 over ERAU. The Eagles beat the Lions twice last season, with a win in the regular season as well as the first round of the SSC tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • Embry-Riddle won each of the first two faceoffs to begin the game, but a pair of early turnovers were capitalized upon by Saint Leo who led 2-0 at 13:01.
  • ERAU responded with a third straight faceoff win, as Luke Barber scooped up the ground ball and scored just 13 seconds later to put the Eagles on the board.
  • The Lions pulled off a similar move to the Eagles, winning the ensuing faceoff and finding the back of the net just 30 seconds after Barber's goal to make it 3-1 with 12:18 remaining.
  • Following a timeout by the Blue and Gold, ERAU settled in and cut into the deficit on a goal from Gavin Young, assisted by Lucas Anthony, at 6:32 to make it 3-2.
  • After a shot from Spence Hondru that hit the post, Saint Leo scored a pair of goals within 60 seconds of each other, leading 5-2, with four minutes left in the period.
  • On his senior day, Tim Keefe recorded his first point when he made it 5-3 at the 3:27 mark. Keefe did not wait long to add to his tally, providing an assist for Young's second goal, closing the quarter at 5-4.
Second Quarter
  • Saint Leo opened the second quarter with two goals, both assisted by Aidan Knoetgen. Knoetgen and Christopher Harper entered the game ranked first and second in the SSC in assists per game, with Knoetgen finishing with five assists on the day.
  • A penalty was given to Knoetgen at 9:16 for slashing and it took less than 30 seconds for the Eagles to find a gap in the man-down defending as Connor Hinson scored his first of the day and made the score, 7-5.
  • ERAU would extend that into a 3-0 run as they tied the game at 7-7 when Keefe and Montes scored within 30 seconds of each other, with Young assisting the seventh goal at 5:44. Keefe, Montes, and Young combined to score each of the last seven goals in the game for the Blue and Gold. 
  • Anderson Smith found the back of the net twice in the final five minutes of the half, sending the game to its intermission with the Lions ahead 9-7.
Third Quarter
  • Embry-Riddle was assessed a penalty in the final two seconds of the first half, allowing Saint Leo to open the third quarter with possession and a man advantage. The Lions capitalized with a man-up goal to make it 10-7, and Tristan LeBlanc added another at the 13:18 mark.
  • Keefe responded with a man-up goal of his own with 10:29 on the clock to make the game, 11-8.
  • The four-goal lead for Saint Leo had quickly been cut in half after another goal from Montes who was assisted by Harper following a quick restart of play at 8:12.
  • The teams traded a goal each over the final eight minutes, as LeBlanc and Montes each tallied their second of the quarter, with Saint Leo leading 12-10 entering the fourth.
  • Carter Groezinger replaced Reid Kerr in goal with 3:29 remaining in the quarter, and the senior made a pair of saves in the final 15 seconds to keep ERAU within striking distance.
Fourth Quarter
  • Saint Leo opened the fourth quarter with three straight goals, building a five-goal lead at 15-10 with 9:35 remaining.
  • The Eagles held the Lions scoreless the rest of the way and began to chip away at the deficit, as Montes matched his career high with his fourth goal at 7:11 to make it 15-11.
  • Young added an unassisted goal with 3:32 to play, cutting the deficit to 15-12 and giving ERAU a chance at the faceoff. However, Tucker Leggett recorded three saves over the final three minutes to preserve the Saint Leo lead.

INSIDE THE STATS
UP NEXT
The Eagles will play their regular season finale on Wednesday, April 15, at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to take on Florida Southern in Lakeland. With a win against the Mocs, ERAU will guarantee themselves a spot in the SSC tournament which begins on Saturday, April 18.
