RV Men’s Lacrosse Comeback Falls One Goal Short In 11-10 Loss at Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. – RV Embry-Riddle men's lacrosse battled back from being down by five goals on Wednesday night, but came up just short in an 11-10 contest. Florida Southern led 7-2 in the first half before ERAU scored four answered goals, but the Eagles were never able to get back level with the Mocs. With a pair of wins in the SSC already this season, the Blue and Gold did enough to earn a spot in the conference tournament despite the loss tonight.

RECORDS:
RV Embry-Riddle: 7-7, (2-5, SSC)
Florida Southern: 5-9, (4-3, SSC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • Defenses were dominant to begin the evening, leading to only two goals in the first 13 minutes of the game. The scoring got started at 8:44 when Elijah Terry scored an unassisted goal for the Mocs.
  • After the FSC goal, ERAU took four of the next five shots, with the last of those being a goal from Leo Mileto who was assisted by Gavin Young with 4:49 remaining in the quarter.
  • The Eagles outshot Florida Southern 10-6 in the opening period, but it was the Mocs who put more shots on target, leading that category, 5-3 after 15 minutes.
  • Terry also scored the second goal of the night for the Mocs along with Jacob Czyz each finding the back of the net in the final 90 seconds of the quarter.

Second Quarter
  • Lucas Anthony opened the scoring in the second quarter and made it 3-2 when he scored a man-up goal at 11:54 after Florida Southern was found with an illegal stick during a timeout.
  • FSC went ahead 4-2 after a goal with 8:14 remaining in the period after a successful clear. The two teams combined to go 24-for-25 on the clear in the first half.
  • Three goals in a two-minute span from the Mocs quickly changed the game as they suddenly led 7-2 after a pair of faceoff wins. The Blue and Gold went 7-for-12 on faceoffs in the first half, but Florida Southern went 10-for-13 at the X in the second half.
  • Anthony helped provide a spark for ERAU heading into halftime as he scored in the final 30 seconds of the quarter, giving us a 7-3 scoreline at halftime.

Third Quarter
  • In the third quarter, there would only be one goal scored. Young scored his second of the night, cutting the Mocs lead to 7-4. Young combined with Anthony to score three of the first four of the night for the Blue and Gold.
  • Reid Kerr and Riley Secreti combined to make 29 saves during the game, with each goalie recording a save percentage of .560 or better. They made seven saves in the third period.
  • Embry-Riddle was called for a pair of penalties in the quarter but they did not give up a goal on either occasion, forcing Florida Southern to go 0-for-4 on extra-man opportunities throughout the game.

Fourth Quarter
  • Following a defensive third quarter, the Eagles and Mocs scored 10 goals in the final 15 minutes of the night. ERAU scored two in the first 90 seconds through Young and Christopher Harper, making it 7-6 with 13:39 remaining.
  • FSC's three-goal advantage was restored just a couple of minutes later when they scored a pair of goals just 30 seconds apart. At 10:43, the score was now 9-6.
  • Knowing the regular season was coming to an end tonight, each team was desperate for the win, leading to six goals being scored in the final 4:35. Lucas Anthony became the first Eagle with a hat trick when he brought the game to 9-7.
  • The first goal of the game from Tim Keefe helped cancel out the tally from Florida Southern, making the game 10-8 with 3:04 left to play.
  • The Mocs thought they had set themselves up for a comfortable finish after Elijah Terry scored to give his team a three-goal lead at 1:52, but Embry-Riddle had one final push.
  • A man-up goal from Pierce Montes along with another goal from Tim Keefe in the final minute made the score 11-10, but a faceoff win from FSC in the final minute was enough to run out the clock and help themselves finish the regular season with a narrow win.
