RV Men’s Lacrosse Drops 9-8 Contest on Last-Second Shot at No. 19 Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. – RV Embry-Riddle men's lacrosse was involved in a back-and-forth game against Rollins on Wednesday evening, falling 9-8 after a late goal from the Tars. Neither team was able to build up more than a one-goal lead in a game that saw eight ties and five lead changes. ERAU shut out their rivals in the third quarter but four goals in the final period from Rollins with the last goal coming in the final 10 seconds was enough for them to escape with the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • The tough weather conditions did not seem to impact either team in the opening stages, as the sides combined for two goals in the first two minutes. Nate Paulo opened the scoring for Rollins at the 14:20 mark.
  • After winning the ensuing faceoff, Lucas Anthony answered for ERAU, leveling the score at 1-1 with 13:07 remaining in the quarter.
  • Anthony then provided the assist on the next Embry-Riddle goal which was finished by Leo Mileto still inside the first five minutes of the game. The fast-paced quarter saw the teams combine for 14 shots on goal and six total goals.
  • Aaron Williams saw his first shot on goal of the game saved by Reid Kerr, but Williams scored on his second chance to make the game 2-2 after the Tars picked up the ground ball on the rebound.
  • Pierce Montes, a transfer from Rollins, gave the Eagles a 3-2 advantage with 1:58 left in the quarter following a successful clear. Embry-Riddle remained perfect on clears in the first half at 14-for-14.
  • Only 42 seconds later, the Tars levelled the game at three goals apiece. The Eagles won the resulting faceoff but could not find the back of the net with any of their last three shots in the period.
Second Quarter
  • Gavin Young became the fourth different ERAU player to score when the freshman midfielder put the Eagles ahead 4-3 at the 9:28 mark with his 10th goal of the year.
  • Rollins responded with back-to-back goals on consecutive shots, regaining a 5-4 lead with scores at 6:05 and 4:54 remaining in the quarter.
  • The defenses tightened over the remainder of the period, as the teams combined for 11 turnovers while limiting each other to just seven shots on goal and three total goals in the quarter.
Third Quarter
  • Embry-Riddle was the only team to score in the third quarter with their first goal coming from Mileto who tied the game at 5-5 with 9:14 left in the period.
  • Connor Hinson scored a timely goal, his first since February 28, off of an assist from Montes to reclaim ERAU's lead and still 5:42 on the clock.
  • The defense of the Eagles forced the Tars into low-percentage shots throughout the period. Rollins took 14 total shots and only two of those were on target, as Kerr saved each of the two shots.
Fourth Quarter
  • Aaron Williams set the tone early in the fourth quarter, scoring twice at 14:13 and 12:26. His second goal gave him a hat trick and put Rollins ahead 7-6.
  • In a game with relatively few penalties, Embry-Riddle capitalized on the rare man-up opportunity. After a one-minute penalty at 8:54, the Eagles only needed 44 seconds before Montes scored his second goal of the night and was assisted by Christopher Harper.
  • Following a timeout from the Tars at 7:35, Williams scored his third goal of the quarter at 7:21. Rollins went back in front 8-7.
  • Anthony drew the game level for the eighth time when he made it 8-8 with only 4:36 left in regulation. The defensive battle continued as each team searched for the decisive goal as time continued to wind down.
  • Following a halftime goalie change, Colin Selters and Kerr combined to make three saves over the final 2:36. Kerr finished with 13 saves on the night and a .590 save percentage.
  • Embry-Riddle called a timeout with 1:30 remaining and came out with a quality scoring chance. Lucas Anthony got a great look at goal but saw his shot saved by Selters. Rollins secured the ground ball and completed the clear with 30 seconds remaining.
  • Logan McHugh saw his initial shot blocked in the final 10 seconds, but the rebound landed back in McHugh's stick, letting him score the rebound with 7.1 seconds remaining.
  • The Eagles won the faceoff and Jaxon Holden raced it down but his shot with one second left bounced wide of the net.
