WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Behind record-setting performances by junior Janelle Marinos and freshman Marissa Gonzales, the Embry-Riddle (Fla.) volleyball team defeated Northwood University (Fla.), 3-1 (28-30, 30-20, 30-26, 30-25), in the regular season finale for both schools Friday evening.
The Eagles improve to 24-11 overall and 10-4 in the Florida Sun Conference with the win, claiming third place in the conference and earning a spot in the Region XIV Championships. The Seahawks finish the season at 7-18, with a 2-12 mark in league play.
Marinos paced the Eagles attack with 39 kills, setting a new school record for most kills in a match. She also recorded 16 digs. Gonzales, meanwhile, dished out 67 assists, establishing a new school mark for most assists in a four-game contest and eclipsed the ERAU record for assists in a season with 1350 on the year shattering the old mark of 1,310 set by Brooke Geiger ('04) in?2001. Gonzales notched 19 digs as well. Sophomore Daniela Brazolino also turned in a double-double performance for ERAU with 23 kills and 29 digs. ?
Seniors Capri Hilgendorf and Stephanie Swanson led the Seahawks attack with 16 kills apiece. Hilgendorf was also one five Northwood players to reach double digits in digs with 18. Senior Claudia Andrade had a double-double 11 kills and 19 digs.
Game one was a back-and-forth affair early that saw both teams trade points until Northwood built a 14-10 lead. ERAU rallied, coming back to tie the game at 15-all. The Seahawks took control from there though, scoring four straight points to build an 18-15 lead that they would never relinquish, winning the game, 30-28.
The Eagles used a solid offensive attack to win game two, 30-20, committing only four attack errors on 57 attempts for an impressive .459 attack percentage in the game.
Northwood built an early 6-4 advantage in game three and held the lead until the midway point in the match when ERAU scored six of eights points to build a 19-16 advantage. The Seahawks pulled within one, 25-24, later in the match, but the Eagles scored three unanswered points on its way to a 30-26 victory.
