ERAU Volleyball Gets Swept at Houghton College Tournament

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Embry-Riddle University women's volleyball team dropped two more matches Saturday at the Houghton College Tournament to fall to 0-4 on the season. The Eagles fell 3-0 to Taylor University (Ind.) (20-30, 20-30, 25-30) and closed out the event with a 3-1 loss to Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) (23-30, 22-30, 30-27, 11-30).

Although disappointed with her team's performance and inability to break into the win column this weekend, second-year head coach Joslynn Gallop realizes her young squad comprised of five players who have only year experience in her program and six newcomers to the team (four freshman) have grown from the weekend, not only in playing experience, but also team bonding being on the road since Wednesday.

"We definitely have some work to do, it may be fine-tuning some things and possibly some changes to make, but we've got a lot of work to do," Gallop said. "It was a good experience with our young team and we know where we have to take our level of play to be successful."

Freshman middle hitter Jenn Meglic showed why she was one of Gallop's top recruits earning All-Tournament honors highlighted by her .383 hitting percentage against Taylor finishing with 16 kills on 27 attempts.

Fellow rookie setter Kristen Hassett saw her first extensive playing time recording 19 assists in the defeat, while sophomore Jenni Nelsen and freshman Savannah Trakes finished with 10 digs apiece.

Trakes hit .300 in the loss to Roberts Wesleyan finished with seven kills in 21 attempts with just one hitting error. Sophomore setter Marissa Gonzales posted 26 assists and six service aces.

The young Eagle squad has little time to regroup as they host NCAA Division II Lynn University on Wednesday August 30 at 7 p.m. with the return of Seabreeze High School's Larissa Witherspoon who enters her senior year with the Fighting Knights.
