Seniors Lead Eagles Over Saints

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle Eagles volleyball seniors hit an outstanding .380, marking 16 kills in their three set victory over the St. Francis Saints (Ill.) on Wednesday (25-22, 25-21, 25-12).

Despite not leading the team in kills, both senior attackers Jenni Nelsen and Corey Dobridnia combined for 14 kills. Dobridnia had seven kills hitting .778, along with five blocks in the game (one solo and four assisted). Nelsen also had seven kills and marked three block assists. Marissa Gonzales had 36 assists in the match, averaging 12 per set. She also had two kills, nine digs and a service ace.

The Eagles defeated the Saints just one night after St. Francis topped ERAU's rival Webber International in four sets. Embry-Riddle's record moves to 22-1 overall and holds at 11-1 in conference play. The Saints fall to 19-18 after the loss.

In set one, the ball switched possession 24 times, with back to back kills by Abby Hall, solidifying the Eagles win. The Eagles took a 9-4 lead in the second set before the Saints came back to tie the game at 10. The back and forth play continued through the rest of the set but key attack errors by the Saints and a service ace by Alana Martinez gave the Eagles the 2-0 lead.

Embry-Riddle came out of intermission with fire in their arms. Nelsen, Dobridnia, Hall and Martinez's swings put the the home team up 12-2, forcing St. Francis's coach to use her final time out. The momentum did not drop as the Eagles claimed the victory in three sets.

ERAU hit .306 in the match, completing 43 of their 108 attacks. Hall led the team with 11 kills. Martinez trailed Hall by two, with nine kills an ace and three blocks. Savannah Trakes had seven kills in the match.

The Blue and Gold will continue their home-stand, hosting Nova Southeastern on Saturday in the ICI Center at 4 p.m.
