Sharks Top Eagles, 3-2

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The Embry-Riddle Eagles volleyball team suffered their second loss of the season on Saturday in a hard fought battle at the hands of NCAA DII Nova Southeastern Sharks, 3-2 (9-25, 25-17, 25-22, 16-25, 13-15).

ERAU's record now moves to 22-2, 11-1 in The Sun Conference. Nova Southeastern's record now stands at 18-6 overall.

The Eagles, without their season kills leader Abby Hall, seemed to have problems adjusting to the new rotation in the first set. The Sharks were able to capitalize on the Eagles adjustments, marking 15 kills to the Eagles three in the first set.

Embry-Riddle picked up their energy in the second set as a key kill by Lauren Anastase put the Eagles in the lead 8-7. The Sharks would come back to tie the game two more times but seem to suffer as long volleys and quick Eagle arms caught the visitors out of position and brought the Eagles a set two victory.

The lead went back and forth six different times before the Eagles took the lead for good in set three on a kill by Alana Martinez, 19-18. She picked up another kill to put her team up 21-19 before serving an ace that gave the Eagles the needed momentum to put the home team up 2-1.

Despite back and forth play early in set four, Nova Southeastern pulled ahead at 8-7 and maintained their lead by tallying 12 kills to tie the score 2-2.

In set five, the Eagles took an early 3-1 lead before NSU's Emily Carle attacked the ball to regain the possession for the Sharks. One service error later, the Eagles were sitting with a two point lead that didn't hold as an Eagles attack error and a kill by the Sharks tied the game at five. Carle served the Sharks to a 8-5 lead before Head Coach Joslynn Gallop called a time out to regroup her team. The Eagles came back to tie the game at 10 on multiple kills by Savannah Trakes and Martinez.

NSU's head coach took a time out when the Eagles went up 11-10, that allowed his team to regroup and tie the game at 11. A kill by Carle put the Sharks up 14-12 before the Eagles took their final timeout. Trakes marked a huge kill on the following volley that cut the lead to one. Carle hit a deep attack down the line for a kill to finalize the victory for the Sharks.

Martinez and Trakes each tallied eight kills in the match. Trakes also had 22 digs and one block solo as Martinez had three assisted blocks and a service ace. Gonzales had 28 assists, a service ace and three blocks (one solo and two assisted). Julia Frassetto marked a season high 27 digs in the match.

The Blue and Gold will return to the court on Thursday, Oct. 30 in St. Augustine, Fla. They will face off against Flagler in the first annual ERAU v. FC Dig for the Cure.
