SAVANNAH, Ga. ? The Embry-Riddle Eagles earned their way into the championship match of The Sun Conference tournament, as they topped the St. Thomas Bobcats in four sets on Friday evening (25-9, 25-21, 18-25, 25-13).
In set one the Eagles pulled away from the Bobcats at 4-3, going up by six before St. Thomas regained the serve.
Abby Hall had 4 kills, trailed by
Jenni Nelsen with one, in the first set to lead the team to go up 1-0.
The Bobcats called a time out after going down 0-1 at the beginning of set two and it paid off as STU went up 3-2 and kept a share of the lead until the Eagles tied the game 18-18. A kill by
Corey Dobridnia put the Eagles up one and it was followed by two consecutive service aces by
Marissa Gonzales that gave the Eagles the momentum to take the 2-0 game lead.
The Bobcats took their high scoring momentum from the second set into the third as they out hit the Eagles .243 to .105, taking the third set.
Embry-Riddle hit hard and picked up most of St. Thomas's attacks in the fourth set, replicating their play in the first set as they took the match, 3-1. Nelsen led the team with 12 kills in the match. Both Hall and
Savannah Trakes tallied 10 kills and had 15 and 16 digs respectively. Gonzales finished the game with 37 assists.
The Blue and Gold will go head to head against Webber International at noon on Saturday in Savannah, Ga. at the Savannah Country Day High School gymnasium.
