Eagles Top Bees, 3-2

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A kill by Jenni Nelsen and a blocking error by the Savannah College of Art and Design Bees solidified the 17-15 match-win for the Embry-Riddle Eagles in the fifth set on Saturday as the home team added another win to their conference leading 12-1 record.

The Eagles are now 23-3 overall and are one match away from their first ever regular season championship. The Bees, with their third conference loss of the season, will no longer be able to repeat as conference champions. SCAD's record moves to 15-9 overall and 10-3 in league play.

Julia Frassetto served the Eagles to an eight point lead in the first set, 12-4, as the home team came up with two big kills and a block by Savannah Trakes. The Eagles held the Bees to a .45 percent side-out percentage as SCAD was not able to produce more than a two point rally throughout the rest of the set. Trakes hit a deep ball to take the first set for the Eagles, 25-16.

Alana Martinez tallied three kills and an assisted block in the Eagles seven point run where they went up 21-13 in the second set. Abby Hall assisted Martinez on the block. SCAD began to mount a comeback, capitalizing on Eagle errors, but a key time out by head coach Joslynn Gallop produced another kill by Martinez on the next play. Hall picked up a kill to put the Eagles ready for set point, 24-20. She then stepped behind the service line and recorded one of her team leading three aces to put the Eagles up 2-0.

The Bees came out of intermission more gathered and took an early 11-5 lead. The Eagles were not able to bounce back, as they failed to produce no more than two points each run, resulting in a 25-20 victory for SCAD in the third set.

SCAD's momentum carried them through the fourth set, as they led 18-11 before the Eagles began a strike. Abby Hall picked up an ace and Corey Dobridnia followed with a kill. SCAD took a timeout and was successful at cutting the Eagles speed as they won the point and took off to win 25-18.

The fifth set was the most dramatic set victory for the Eagles this season. The Eagles got an early 3-0 lead, forcing the Bees to call a timeout. SCAD took a point following their timeout ,but the Eagles won the ball back on a kill by Hall to go up 4-1. The Eagles had two service errors in the following four points to lead by three and give SCAD some momentum, 7-4. SCAD pulled within one at 11-10, before Gallop took the Eagles first timeout of the set. Martinez's arm put the Eagles up 12-10 but when faced with game point at 14-13 the Bees were able to pick up a kill by Kendall Nichols. Dobridnia picked up one of her nine kills in the next volley as she put her team up 15-14. The Bee's Heather Friend tied the game at 15 on a deep attack. A service error by the Bees put the Eagles up one and the match was won on a kill by Nelsen.

This is the fourth match this season that the Eagles have won in five sets. The Blue and Gold will step on the court in West Palm Beach, Fla. on Wednesday to face Palm Beach Atlantic in their final non-conference match of the season. The match will start at 7 p.m.

The Eagles can clinch The Sun Conference regular season championship with a win over Edward Waters College on Thursday night in the ICI Center.
