DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? After dropping two doubles points, the eighth-ranked Savannah College of Art and Design (11-5) women's tennis team won four singles matches to edge ninth-ranked Embry-Riddle (11-7) 5-4 in the championship match of the NAIA Region XIV tournament on Saturday. With the victory the Bees earned an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships in Mobile, Ala., May 12-16.
ERAU gained points at the top two doubles spots as Natasa Zoricic and Hana Im downed Irina Pljuszyin and Courtney Collins 8-4 and Natalie Anaya and Lindsey Kurtz topped Romina Mrochen and Stephanie Gula.by the same score. The Bees got a point back at the third position as Hillary Collins and Erica Cardenas held off Sara Abraul and Marga Rico Jimenez 8-4.
In singles play, Abraul defeated Cardenas 6-0, 6-2 and Zoricic bested Pljuszyin 6-2, 6-3 to put the Eagles up 4-1.
The Bees' first singles win came at the No. 4 spot where Courtney Collins downed Kurtz 7-5, 6-0.
The matches at the second and third positions were both three-setters. Mrochen went up 6-2 in the first set over Im, dropped the second set 6-2, but came back to take the third 6-3 to make the score 4-3 in favor of the Eagles.
At the No. 3 spot, Hillary Collins and Anaya each won a set with Collins taking the first 6-2 and Anaya taking the second by the same margin. With the score knotted at 4-4 in the third set, Collins won the next two games to tie the team score at 4-4.
The deciding match was at the No. 5 spot and Gula held off Rico Jimenez 7-6 (7-5) in the first set and won the second 6-3 to clinch the victory.
