DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - It took the Embry-Riddle Eagles volleyball team three sets to warm up in their second victory of the season, taking three of four sets from Faulkner in their first match of the Homewood Suites Invitational at the ICI Center on Friday afternoon (25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 25-7).
Faulkner came into the game fresh off a five-set match victory against Baker (Kan.) earlier in the day, playing tight against the tournament hosts in the first two sets. Although ERAU kept the score close in the third set, Faulkner took the momentum when Lerin Hoback aided her team with two kills and a service ace to take the lead 20-14, and give Faulkner the push to take the set.
The Eagles came out hot in the fourth set, as Corey Dobridnia had two quick kills and followed them with a block assist (aided by Jenni Nelsen) to give the Eagles the 4-1 lead that was enough of a push for the team to show the skills they had shown in their first victory of the season against Southeastern on Aug. 23. Embry-Riddle charted a .458 hitting percentage in the fourth set, largely aided by the Eagles middles (including Dobridnia) who charted six of their 17 combined kills on the day.
Freshman Abby Hall led the Eagles with 19 kills, matching the number she tallied in her rookie debut. 2007 kills leader, Savannah Trakes posted 11 kills while picking up 12 digs. Sophomore Hannah Rasmussen started her first game as the Eagles' libero, digging up 17 of Faulkner's attack attempts. Dobridnia ended the day with 8 kills, hitting .375, with four block assists. Her counterpart, Martinez marked nine kills with three service aces and five total blocks. Marissa Gonzales notched 43 assists with two service aces and two kills in the match. Nelsen had four kills and four blocks in the match.
The Blue and Gold will host Mountain State in their second game of the Homewood Suites Invitational at 6 p.m. on Friday evening in the ICI Center on the Embry-Riddle campus.
