EL CAJON, Calif. ? Senior
Marissa Gonzales guided the Embry-Riddle Eagles to a 2-0 (7-0 overall) record on the teams' first day of the Pacific Coast Classic with 70 assists on the day. The Eagles posted wins against Bethany (Calif.) and King (Tenn.).
ERAU took the first match in three sets. The Eagles took the first set in fifteen minutes (25-12) and stepped off the pressure in the second set, as Bethany came back to tie the game at 22. BU kept it close until
Alana Martinez had back-to-back kills to take the set for the Eagles (26-24).
Embry-Riddle won by their biggest margin of victory in set three, holding BU to six points. It was the first time since September 26, 2007, against Edward Waters, where the Eagles held an opponent to six or fewer points in a set.
Gonzales tallied 16 of her 38 assists against Bethany, off of
Abby Hall attacks. Hall attacked for a percentage of .609, the fifth highest in school history in a match, marking 16 kills in 23 attempts.
As a team the Eagles hit for .394 which marks as the sixth highest hitting percentage game in Eagles volleyball history. The percentage was aided by kills from Hall (16),
Jenni Nelsen (9),
Savannah Trakes (9), Martinez (6), Gonzales (4),
Jenn Meglic (4) and
Corey Dobridnia (2).
The second match of the day was more of a challenge for the Blue and Gold as the margin of victory was two, four and three points, respectively in each set.
In set one, King got off to a 10-5 lead before
Alana Martinez and
Abby Hall kills put the Eagles back in striking distance. ERAU tied the game at 17 and battled back-and-forth for the lead through the next thirteen points scored. The Eagles went up 24-23 on a service error by their opponents and
Jenni Nelsen served the final game point as the Eagles took game one.
The Eagles had three service aces in the team's final five points to take the second set 25-21. Martinez had two and Nelsen served one of the aces.
ERAU took a 15-12 lead before King took a timeout in the third set, but didn't let it waver their momentum as they went up by two more before King began to climb back and tie the score at 19. Head Coach
Joslynn Gallop then took her first timeout of the set to give her team the needed relief to take the match.
Embry-Riddle marked 12 service aces against King, with Martinez, Hall and Trakes each tallying three and Nelsen marking two. Hall had two kills in the Eagles' final five points of the third set and led the team with 13 in the match. Trakes marked eight of each kills and digs. Martinez had seven kills in the match and Nelsen trailed her with six.
The Blue and Gold will face the Pacific Coast Classic host, San Diego Christian at 10 a.m. (PDT) and by virtue of record, will play in the championship match at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
