EL CAJON, Calif. ?
Corey Dobridnia tallied 17 kills hitting .630 for the Eagles in the tough five-set win over the San Diego Christian Hawks in the final game of pool play at the Pacific Coast Classic on Saturday morning (22-25, 26-24, 20-25, 25-17, 15-11).
Dobridnia attacked for the fourth highest attack percentage in a match at Embry-Riddle, going 17 for 27 with no errors on the day. She also had six total blocks, two solo and four assited. Dobridnia was assisted on one of her blocks and on all of her kills by
Marissa Gonzales who had 52 assists in the game as well as tallying three kills, two block assists and a service ace.
The Eagles marked the third highest amount of aces in a five-set match with 14, seven of which came from freshman
Abby Hall. Hall's numbers from behind the service line move her to second all-time in aces in a five game match by one person.
Jenni Nelsen (3),
Savannah Trakes (2), Gonzales and
Rebecca Heller (1) each contributed to the aces total.
San Diego Christian started off strong taking an early lead, but the Eagles climbed back to come within one of the Hawks at 18-17. SDCC again took off and reached game point with the Eagles sitting at 21. A kill by
Savannah Trakes put the Eagle back in striking mode but a service error gave the Hawks set one.
Embry-Riddle took the momentum early in set two, going up 4-0 and increased their lead to nine at 18-9. The Hawks did not falter on their home court as they pushed back and tied the game at 24. A huge block by Nelsen and Dobridnia led the Eagles to game point and set two was sealed by a Hall service ace.
The Hawks tallied 16 kills to the Eagles 10 in set three to go up 2-1. The Eagles got into swing in the fourth set taking an early 9-5 lead. Trakes and Dobridnia each tallied five kills along with Hall marking four, pushing the sets even.
Gonzales, as the floor captain, won the coin toss for the final set giving the Eagles the first serve in the final set. Hall served the first point as a short ace, mishandled by the Hawks defense and killed the next volley. She then returned with her final ace of the day giving the Eagles the early lead.
SDCC came back and tied the game at five and took the lead at 6-5 but could not control the Eagle steam as back-to-back kills from Trakes and Hall gave the Eagles the much needed push to take the fifth set.
Hall marked 15 kills in the match in 42 attempts along with digging up 14 of the Hawks attack attempts. Trakes did just the opposite of Hall, chalking up 14 kills and 15 digs.
Julia Frassetto led the team in digs with 19 in the match.
The Eagles 8-0 overall record ties the longest season opening win streak in ERAU volleyball history. The 1996 team that went 25-6 overall, opened their season 8-0 before suffering a loss to Nova Southeastern on Sept. 13.
The Blue and Gold will play in the championship game of the Pacific Coast Classic, repeating their first match of the day against San Diego Christian at 7 p.m. (PST).
