DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The third-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team defeated NCAA II No. 10 Rollins, 6-3, in the Eagles second home match of the season on Tuesday. The Blue and Gold improve their overall record to 4-1, while the Tars fall to 3-2.
Rollins took an early 1-0 lead after
Carlos Bes Comeras and Jan Hoekzma, playing at No. 1 doubles, were forced to retire due to injury. The Eagles quickly evened the score when
Adrian Bayh and
Charlie Rice topped Rollins' Nick Rowlands and Gustavo Carvahlo at the No. 2 spot, 8-5. Embry-Riddle won a close battle at the No. 3 position when
Peter Francis and
Istvan Bolgar downed the Tars' Bill Rockwood and Jon Emmet 8-6, giving the Eagles a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.
Zander Woodford-Smith moved up in the line-up to play in the No. 6 position and earned the first singles point for ERAU after defeating Rollins' Andy Johnson in two sets, 6-1, 6-0. Francis improved the Eagles score to 4-1 when he beat Rowlands 6-3, 6-3 at the third spot. Bayh played the Tars' No. 2 Jeff Morris, but could not come away with the win, falling 4-6, 2-6 to give Rollins their second point on the day.
Rice won the first set against Rockwood, 6-4, at the fourth spot and clinched the match for the Eagles with a strong 6-1 victory over Rockwood in the second set.
Both Bes Comeras and Bolgar found themselves down one set at No. 1 and No. 5, respectively. Both rebounded to claim second-set wins as Bolgar topped Carvalho 6-4 and Bes Comeras downed Tan 6-1, to force a third set for both players. Bolgar won his tie breaker 10-4 to put the Eagles up 6-2, but although he fought hard throughout the entire set, scoring six total points, Bes Comeras could not pull out the win falling 10-6 to Tan.
The Eagles will return to their home court on Saturday when they face Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College at 12 p.m.
