Third-Ranked Eagles Cruise Past Webber International 9-0

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The third-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team turned in its second shutout in as many contests, dropping Sun Conference opponent Webber International 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles are now 11-2 overall and 3-0 in league play, while the Warriors fall to 14-7 and 2-3 in the conference.

Peter Francis and Istvan Bolgar wasted little time collecting their 10th doubles win of the season, as they defeated the Warrior duo of Francisco Franco Reyne Hospeddes 8-0.

Playing at No. 2 doubles, the Eagle pair of Adrian Bayh and Charlie Rice got off to a slow start, falling behind 6-1 to Rafael Teixeira and Nacho Cachan. But they shook off the rust from the seven-day lay-off due to spring break and embarked on an improbable rally to tie the score at 7-7. Rice and Bayh broke the Warrior pair's serve in the next game and with the match score at 8-7 in favor of the Eagles, Bayh recorded back-to-back service aces en route to a 9-7 comeback win.

The match at the top doubles spot was also closely contested, but Carlos Bes Comeras and Jan Hoekzema held off Philippe Andermatt and Caio Cardoso, 8-6, to give the Eagles a 3-0 cushion heading into singles play.

The Eagle men carried the momentum of their doubles sweep into singles play as none of the six singles players yielded more than three points in any match. Bes Comeras was the first to finish his match, downing Teixeira 6-1, 6-0. Moments later, Francis registered the clincher at No. 3 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Cardoso.

Hoekzema followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Andermatt at No. 2 and Rice easily handled Cachan 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4. Zander Woodford-Smith breezed past  Franco 6-0, 6-1 and Bolgar secured a perfect score for the Eagles with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Hospeddes.

The Eagles next match will be against conference foe Northwood at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Embry-Riddle's Crotty Tennis Complex.
