DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team, ranked third in the NAIA, notched its third win of the year against an NCAA Division II opponent, topping No. 17 Florida Southern, Saturday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles are now 6-1 on the year, while the Moccasins fall to 6-4.
The first team to finish its doubles match was ERAU's
Carlos Bes Comeras and
Jan Hoekzema, who downed Roman Schirmaier and Javier Castro 8-3 at the No. 1 position. Adrian Bay and
Charlie Rice put the Eagles up 2-0 with an 8-4 win over the FSC team of Ben Taylor and Gunther Fercher.
At No. 3 doubles, Embry-Riddle's
Istvan Bolgar and
Peter Francis went down a break at 2-1 then came back to win a break to make the score 3-3 before going up 5-3. With the score at 7-6 and FSC's Nicolas Bigler and Greg Heartt serving, Bolgar and Francis scored their third break point of the match to win 8-6 and give the Eagles a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
Zander Woodford-Smith was the first to finish his singles match as he registered a 6-2, 6-3 win over Heartt at No. 6.
The next match off the court was at the No. 4 spot where Francis topped Taylor 6-2, 6-4 to score his first clincher of the year. Hoekzema tallied a 6-3, 6-3 win over Fercher at the second spot.
The three remaining singles matches saw the Eagle players take easy first-set victories. But in each case, the Moccasins battled back to win the second set and force a third set tie breaker. The three Eagle players in question withstood the rallies to seal shutout with
Charlie Rice defeating C.J. Johnson 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 5, Bes Comeras topping 32nd-ranked Schirmaier 6-2, 4-6 10-6 at No. 1 and Bayh holding off Bigler 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
The Eagles take a one-day break before taking on Eastern Kentucky at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
