DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The third-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis won all three doubles matches en route to a 6-1 win over NCAA I Eastern Kentucky, Monday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The win puts the Eagles' overall record at 7-1 while the Colonels fall to 8-5 on the year.
Istvan Bolgar and
Peter Francis recorded the first doubles win for the Eagles, walking off the court with an 8-1 decision against Carlos Valdenebro and Emilio Perez.
Carlos Bes Comeras and
Jan Hoekzema followed with an 8-4 victory over Alex Das and Nik Schroeder to clinch the doubles point, and
Charlie Rice and
Adrian Bayh sealed the Eagles' doubles shutout with an 8-3 win against Mel Segota and Carles Pons.
The Eagles got their first two singles points from the middle of the line-up as Francis downed Parul Verma 6-3, 6-1and Bayh defeated Valdenebro 6-2, 6-4.
The next match to finish was at the No. 2 spot where Hoekzema pulled out a two-set win over Segota. Hoekzema won the first set 6-4 and took a 5-4 lead in the second, but Segota recorded a break to pull the score level at 5-5. Hoekzema remained unflappable and broke back to reclaim the lead and held serve for the win.
EKU got a point back at the No. 1 position when Das registered a 6-4, 6-2 win over Bes Comeras, but that was the only win the Colonels would come away with as Rice defeated Pons 6-3, 1-6, 10-5 and
Zander Woodford-Smith topped Nik Schroeder 7-6 (5), 6-1 to seal the win.
The Eagles' next match will be at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday when they host No. 22 Aquinas at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
