Abby Hall's fifth kill of the match against Lee was the record-breaker, her 1,522nd career kill, breaking Susan Delahanty's all-time kills record at Embry-Riddle
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Abby Hall established a new Embry-Riddle all-time career kills record with a second-set kill against No. 4 Lee (Tenn.) Friday night, breaking the old record of 1,521 kills set by Susan Delahanty in 2004. The Eagles lost the match to Lee, 25-16, 31-29, 25-17, but picked up a 3-0 victory earlier in the day over Shawnee State (Ohio), 25-13, 25-13, 25-12.

The Eagles (17-4) started strong in the first match, opening up a 9-3 lead early against Shawnee State. A kill from Morgan Shattuck pushed the lead to 14-6, and a service ace from Abby Hall extended the margin to double-digits at 18-8. The Eagles wouldn't allow the Bears to get any closer, as Emily Jacobson put down a kill to close out the set, 25-13.

The second set saw the Blue and Gold take an early lead once again with the Eagles getting the jump on the Bears, 7-4. A block from Shattuck and Adriana Vazquez moved the advantage to 12-7, and a kill from Shattuck capped a 5-1 run to put ERAU ahead 17-9. Hall put down another kill to make it 23-13 and the Eagles would go on to take the second set, 25-13.

In set three, Embry-Riddle dominated the early stages as Hall served 11 straight Eagle points to put ERAU ahead 16-3. During that stretch, Hall picked up a pair of kills and six service aces. The Blue and Gold gained a 21-8 lead on a kill from Alison Wade, and Shattuck finished off the match with a kill to give ERAU the third set, 25-12.

Hall led the Eagles with 12 kills (.455 hitting percentage) and seven service aces. Holcomb added eight kills (.533 hitting percentage) and Shattuck chipped in with seven kills (.600 hitting percentage) and a match-high five blocks. Nina Kontrec and Vazquez each picked up a team-high five digs, while Vazquez accumulated 25 assists as the Eagles hit .419 as a team.

The Bears (8-16) were led by Holly Tobias who recorded seven kills (.667 hitting percentage) and Paige Zelich who added five kills. Kirsti Yates recorded a match-high six digs while Hannah Gephart tallied 23 assists.

In their second match of the day, ERAU got off to a very sluggish start, falling behind 7-2 to Lee in the early stages of the first set. The teams traded sideouts until the Eagles rattled off three straight points to pull within four points (18-14), but the Flames rallied back with a 7-2 run to close out the set, 25-16.

In the second set, Embry-Riddle got off to a much better start, staying even the Flames through the first 20 points (10-10). From that point, ERAU went on a 7-2 run started by a Holcomb kill, pushing ahead of Lee 17-12 and forcing the Flames to take a timeout. The Eagles continued their strong play after the timeout, moving closer to taking the set at 22-18 on Hall's record-breaking kill. But the Flames would rally, winning the next four points to knot the set at 22. Embry-Riddle responded with a kill from Martin and a block from Holcomb and Gloria Kemp, grabbing a 24-22 lead and two set points. Once again, Lee was equal to the challenge, as they won the next three points to take a 25-24 lead and a set point of their own. Kemp stepped up big for the Eagles, putting down back-to-back kills to stave off the first set point and give the Eagles a third shot at winning the set. The see-saw then swung back in Lee's favor, as a Holcomb service error and a kill from Irene Ojukwu gave the Flames another set point at 27-26. The Eagles fought off that set point as well as two others before a block by Marija Zelenovic and Lauren Williams finally ended the set at 31-29 in favor of the Flames.

The Blue and Gold came out in the third set looking a little deflated after the emotional second set, falling behind 6-2 early. A kill from Kemp pulled the Eagles to within 8-6, but Lee wouldn't allow ERAU to get any closer than that. Hall put down a kill to move the score to 14-11, and Kemp recorded another kill to give the Eagles hope at 21-17. In the end it wouldn't be enough as the Flames finished the match on a 4-0 run, taking the third set, 25-17.

Holcomb led the Eagles with 10 kills along with eight digs, while Martin added eight kills (.312 hitting percentage) and five digs. Hall, who set the ERAU all-time career kills record with her fifth kill of the match, ended up with seven kills, as did Kemp. Kontrec registered a match-high 14 digs and Vazquez collected a match-high 31 assists.

Lee (20-2) was led by Marija Zelenovic's match-high 14 kills (.455 hitting percentage) along with nine kills from Christa Hutchison. Williams added six kills and a match-high eight blocks, while Arlene Ferreira contributed five kills, eight digs and four blocks. Stephanie Todd led the defense with 10 digs while Kelsey Leffew compiled 22 assists and Gretchen Higdon totaled 16 assists as the Flames hit .296 as a team.

The Eagles return to the court tomorrow to conclude the SCAD Invitational with a pair of matches. At 9 a.m., ERAU will face No. 11 Taylor (Ind.), and Embry-Riddle closes out the tournament with a 1 p.m. match against Union (Tenn.).
