OPA LOCKA, Fla. – The fifth-ranked Embry-Riddle volleyball team officially clinched a berth in The Sun Conference Tournament with a 3-0 sweep (25-6, 25-8, 25-7) at Florida Memorial Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improved to 21-4 overall and 8-0 in conference play, while the Lions fell to 3-17 overall, 0-11 in TSC matches.
The first set saw the Blue and Gold jump out to a 6-2 lead on a block from
Leslie Roper and
Jordan Holcomb. After FMU closed to within a point (6-5), the Eagles rattled off 12 consecutive points including a kill and two service aces from
Abby Hall to take an 18-5 lead. After the Lions snapped the string at 12, Embry-Riddle won seven straight points to close out the set, 25-6.
In set two, ERAU used an 11-0 run keyed by four
Jordan Holcomb service aces to take a 15-3 lead.
Alison Wade picked up an ace to extend the lead to 17-4 and a kill to push the lead to 23-8. Holcomb closed out the set with a kill, giving the Eagles a 25-8 win.
The Blue and Gold used a 4-0 run and two 3-0 runs early in the third set to take a 12-3 lead. Wade's second service ace gave the Eagles a 14-4 lead and a kill from
Morgan Shattuck extended it to 16-5. Roper picked up a kill to spark a 7-0 Eagle run that was capped by a service ace from
Taylor Martin to finish out the set at 25-7.
Martin led the Eagles with 10 kills (.600 hitting percentage) while Holcomb added eight kills (.421 hitting percentage), four blocks and four service aces. Hall recorded six kills in 10 swings in addition to picking up nine digs and three service aces. Roper registered a match-high five blocks (one solo) while
Emily Jacobson and
Gloria Kemp each tallied three kills on their only three attacks.
Nina Kontrec totaled a match-high 10 digs while
Adriana Vazquez (11 assists) and
Erin McIntyre (19 assists) ran an efficient Embry-Riddle offense (.486 team hitting percentage).
Samantha Bennett and Kimberly Robinson led the Lions with three kills apiece, while Sabrina Beckles registered team-highs in digs (6) and assists (7).
The Eagles will close out the road portion of their regular season schedule on Wednesday, Oct. 26 with a trip to Lakeland, Fla. for a 7 p.m. match at Southeastern. Embry-Riddle returns home on Friday, Oct. 28 for a 7 p.m. match against SCAD Savannah, which will also be ROTC Night as the ERAU Patriot Games return to the ICI Center.
