Eagles Suffer 104-102 Overtime Loss to Wildcats

Ray Graham registered a double-double (25 pts, 10 reb) against Johnson & Wales
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team scored in triple digits for the second time this season, but that wasn't enough to get by Johnson & Wales who hit a last-second shot in overtime to top ERAU 104-102 in Sun Conference action on Saturday. The Wildcats avenged a loss to the Eagles earlier this season and improved their record to 11-13 overall and 5-9 in the league, while the Eagles fall to 15-12 and 6-7 in conference play.

Blake Touchard led off the scoring with an unassisted layup at the 19:05 mark. The Wildcats answered with a pair of free throws to tie the score and that kind of back-and-forth play characterized much of the action in the first stanza.

The Wildcats trailed by two (17-15) with 14:16 left in the half, but a Craig Wong basket started an 8-0 JWU run that gave the Wildcats a six-point (23-17) lead, their largest of the half. At the 12-minute mark, DeForest Carter knocked down one his two first-half threes, which led to an Eagle rally that allowed the home team to outscore the visitors 18-6 over the next five and half minutes for a 35-29 Eagle lead.

The advantage was short-lived as three-pointers by Wong and Miles Smith erased the lead and knotted the score at 35-35 with 5:55 left in the half. Both teams traded baskets until Ray Graham's layup and free throw put the Eagles up by four (50-46). Wong's bucket cut the lead to two and after an Eagle turnover, the Wildcats got the ball back to Wong who hit a three from about 25 feet out with seven seconds left to give JWU a 51-50 lead at the break.

Johnson & Wales built a quick five-point lead coming out of the intermission, but steals by Touchard and Carter, a pair of blocks by Sam Ford and a Graham dunk highlighted a 10-2 run that gave the Eagles an eight-point (71-63) lead with 13:39 to play. ERAU was still leading by eight when a Smith three triggered an 11-2 run that put the Wildcats back in front, 90-89, with 1:57 remaining.

At the 1:33 mark, a Carlos Montilla foul sent Carter to the free throw line and the freshman hit two in a row from the charity stripe to tie the score at 91-91. Following an Eagle miss from long-range, the Wildcats got the ball out to Wong on the perimeter, but his attempt from behind the arc bounced off the rim into Eagle hands. ERAU was unable to get a shot off, however, sending the game into overtime.

Embry-Riddle sprinted out to an early lead in extra time, scoring six unanswered to go ahead 97-91. Once again, the Wildcats had an answer as Smith tallied five straight to pull JWU within one. Graham's layup made it a three-point (99-96) game, but Wong sank a pair of free throws and after an Eagle miss on the other, Barry Ingram went to the line and knocked down two more to reclaim the lead for the Wildcats, 100-99. On ERAU's next possession, Carter was fouled on his way the basket, but this time he managed only one of two free throws to register the 11th tie of the game (100-100).

With 57 seconds left, Montilla connected on a layup to put JWU up by two. The Eagles' next attempt with 28 seconds left missed the mark but ERAU regained possession when Carter stripped the ball away from Wong and got it to Applin. Carter quickly got back on offense and was rewarded with a feed from Applin to tie things up at 102-102 with 24 seconds left to play.

Back on offense, the Wildcats called timeout with 14 seconds showing on the clock to draw up a play. They got the ball to their go-to player Wong and the sophomore, who is third in the nation at 22.5 n scoring points per game, delivered, knocking down a mid-range jumper to give the lead back to JWU. Wong's shot left the Eagles with just two seconds to make something happen. They got the ball to Carter, but his half-court heave bounced off the back of the rim as time expired to give the Wildcats the win.

Wong led all scorers with 33 points on 12-of-24 shooting from the field. Montilla added 24 followed by Smith (18) and Ingram (17).

Graham was the high scorer for ERAU with 25 points to go with 10 boards, four assists and three steals. Carter finished with 24 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals, and Touchard and Applin contributed 18 points 16 points, respectively.

The Eagles will play the final regular season home game of 2011-12 at 7 p.m. on Monday when they host No. 25 Warner in Sun Conference play.
