DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The NAIA second-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team earned a point at No. 3 doubles but it was not enough to get past Armstrong Atlantic who came away with an 8-1 victory. The match was the last regular season home contest for ERAU who moves to 15-3 on the year. Armstrong Atlantic, the top-ranked team in NCAA II, extended its unbeaten streak to 20-0.
The Eagles' only point of the day came thanks to the 22
nd-ranked tandem of
Peter Francis and
Simon Felix's 9-7 win over Matus Mydla and Edualdo Bonet. In a battle between doubles teams ranked atop their respective divisions, it was the AASU pair of Mikk Irdoja and Georgi Rumenov who bested ERAU's
Adrian Bayh and
Patrick Besch 8-1 at the top spot. No. 16 Sven Lalic and Pedro Scocuglia's 8-4 win over 10
th-ranked
Chris Freeman and JR Leonik gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
The Pirates' singles lineup featured four players ranked among the top 10 in the NCAA II national singles poll. In the first singles match to reach completion, No. 35 Scocuglia downed ERAU's
David Spennare 6-1, 6-1 on court six. No. 32 Lalic topped Francis by the same score on court five and third-ranked Bonet bested 12
th-ranked Besch 6-4, 6-2 at the second position.
At No. 1 singles, top-ranked Rumenov took the first set against the NAIA's No. 1 player Freeman 6-2, and held off the ERAU junior 6-4 in the second set to put the Pirates up 6-1. Tenth-ranked Mydla got by Bayh 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 and fifth-ranked Irdoja fended off a spirited challenge from 14
th-ranked Felix (6-4, 6-3) at No. 3 to seal the win.
The Eagles will close out regular season play on the road on Saturday with a 1 p.m. fixture against St. Leo.
