HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Embry-Riddle softball team dropped both ends of a double header on Sunday, falling to seventh-ranked William Carey at the Crusaders' John & Nancy Fail field. The Crusaders won the first game 13-0 and followed with a 9-0 win in the second, improving to 14-5 on the year and moving the Eagles' record to 5-13.
The first game saw the Crusaders' pitcher Alli McCaleb hold the Eagles to just one hit in five innings on the way to her eighth win of the year. William Carey knocked out 12 hits, led by Jasmine Shelby's 3-for-4 performance and three RBIs apiece from Sarah Beckman and Hannah Cook-Kelley to give head coach Wendy Hogue her 300th win at WCU.
In the second game,
Robi Zimmerman kept the Lady Crusaders off the board for the first two innings, but three hits and a hit batter helped WCU score twice to take the lead.
The Eagles' best chance to score a run came in the top of the third.
Savannah Smith led off the inning with a single down the left field line and moved up on Zimmerman's sacrifice bunt.
Haleigh Lewis singled up the middle to put runners on the corners but WCU starter Brittany Lang got
Melanie Lee to fly out to left to end the inning.
The Crusader bats came alive in the bottom of the inning as the WCU hitters used seven hits to plate seven runs and put the game out of reach.
Lang had just one strikeout, but got strong backup from her defense, giving up only two hits in five innings of work to claim the win. Zimmerman pitched every inning for the Eagles on Sunday and now stands at 2-6 in the circle.
The Eagles close out their spring break road trip on Monday when they travel to Montgomery, Ala. to take on NAIA No. 8 Auburn Montgomery. Monday's doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m. (CDT).
