DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The seventh-ranked Eagles will probably move up in the NAIA Coaches' Poll tomorrow when the first regular season rankings come out. However, the Blue and Gold did not look like an elite squad on Monday, suffering the first shutout loss since Apr. 26 of 2011. The University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) won 7-0 at Sliwa Stadium, dropping the Eagles to 25-8 overall while the Racers improved to 7-9 on the season.
The visitors got to the Eagles'
Brian Johnson early, plating a run in the top of the first that would hold up for the game-winner. Two consecutive singles to start the frame put runners on second and third and when Vince Anello singled through the left side, the Racers took a 1-0 lead.
Embry-Riddle was held to just two hits by UNOH starter Pichi Torres, but the righty only lasted four frames, giving way to Brodie Mitchell in the fifth who did the rest, finishing the game by allowing only three hits while striking out seven Eagle batters.
The big blow came in the fourth when the Racers pushed across five runs, the most given up in a single inning by the Eagles this year. Cory Cook doubled in two runs to begin the scoring before three more Racers touched home to make it a 6-0 UNOH advantage. The Racers added a run in the seventh to cap the game's scoring.
Jon Rapose and
Dylan Demarest followed Johnson on the mound for the Blue and Gold, giving up one and two hits respectively. However, senior
Andrew Lytle, making just his second appearance of 2013, was the most effective Eagle pitcher, tossing the final 2.2 innings, scattering three hits while striking out three Racer batters.
Most of the Eagle starters were replaced in the seventh with
Matthew Maccarrone making his collegiate debut in the eighth for starting catcher
Adam Cellini.
The Eagles and Racers will meet again tomorrow evening at 6 p.m. for the series finale.
