DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Robert Greco kept the Eagles off balance for most of a chilly night at Embry-Riddle's Sliwa Stadium, but the Bruin right-hander surrendered three runs in the bottom of the fourth, and the Eagle pitching staff made that stand up as the seventh-ranked Eagles downed the 17th-ranked Bellevue Bruins, 4-2 on Sunday evening. Embry-Riddle (12-3) got six solid innings from starter
Brian Johnson before relievers
Eric Green and
Ronnie Lozada slammed the door on the Bruins (6-3-1) in the two-game series opener.
Greco had a no-hitter going against the Eagles through three innings, but he was matched by the Eagles' starter
Brian Johnson who only surrendered one hit through the first three frames.
The Bruins looked to finally get to Johnson in the fourth when they put together back-to-back singles to right field, but when Nate Mullins' base hit found green in the outfield, first baseman Brian Embery tried moving from first to third and was easily thrown out by the Eagles' center fielder
Kyle Chastain, ending the inning and putting some momentum in the Blue and Gold dugout.
Chastain broke up Greco's no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning, moving to second when
Kevin Lindheim collected a base hit in the following at-bat.
Jeff Lemon watched four straight pitches go by for a walk to load the bases, setting up a potential big inning. After Greco struck out
Matt Jacobs,
Adam Cellini singled past a diving third baseman, scoring Chastain and Lindheim and giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead. A fielding error allowed
Liam Goodall to reach base and load the bags again, this time for
Tyler Robbins who came through with a two-out single to right that scored Lemon for a 3-0 Embry-Riddle advantage.
Johnson delivered a shutdown inning in the fifth, stranding a pair of Bruins on the bases and the Eagles rewarded him with an insurance run in the home-half of the frame when Lemon singled in Chastain to make the score 4-0 in favor of the hosts.
Johnson found himself in trouble in the seventh when he loaded the bases before walking in a run, but Green entered with no outs and got a pair of strikeouts sandwiched around an RBI groundout to stem the tide and keep the Eagles in front, 4-2.
Greco and reliever Sean Felt allowed just one Eagle to reach base over the next two innings, but Green and Lozada dominated the Bruins over the last Bellevue at-bats, striking out five batters, including the final two to secure the win for Johnson and the Eagles.
Johnson (2-0) threw 6.0 frames, scattering five hits while fanning four. Green pitched 2.0 innings, giving up just one hit and striking out five BU hitters and Lozada earned his second save of the season with a perfect ninth with a pair of Ks.
Cellini was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Lemon finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
The same two teams will be back in action tomorrow night, Monday, Mar. 4 at 6 p.m.
