ERAU Women Through to Second Round with 9-0 Win Over Mobile

Hui-I Huang fought off four match points to win her singles match against Mobile
MOBILE, Ala. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team opened play at the 33rd Annual NAIA National Championship with a 9-0 win over host Mobile (10-5), Tuesday at the Mobile Tennis Center. The Eagles (11-10) surrendered just three games in doubles play, which lasted just 37 minutes, on the way to the second round of the 24-team tournament.

The Eagles took an early 3-0 lead following doubles play beginning with the sixth-ranked duo of Kristina Marova and Hui-I Huang's 8-1 decision against Agnes Rozite and Stephanie Tomita at the top doubles spot. Meena Bennett and Ana Gonzalez-Hoy were close behind with an 8-1 defeat of Susan Berner and Cynthia Summersgill at No. 3 and Paola Montero and Giovanna Tomiotto completed the sweep with an 8-1 victory of their own against Treya Smith and Ambria Phillips at the second position.

Bennett was the first to finish her match at No. 6 singles as she dispatched Summersgill 6-1, 6-0 to put the Eagles up 4-0. Montero was next off the court following her 6-1, 6-0 win over Smith on court three, which clinched the victory for the Blue and Gold.

Marova, Tomiotto and Gonzalez-Hoy each registered straight set victories with Marova besting Tomita 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2, Tomiotto blanking Phillips 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and Gonzalez-Hoy holding off Berner 6-2, 6-4 at the fifth spot.

The final match off the court was at No. 1 singles where Huang, the 2013 ITA/NAIA Rookie of the Year, topped Rozite 6-1 in the first set, but Mobile's top player battled back for a 6-1 second-set win to force the third set tiebreaker. The third set saw Rozite open up a 4-0 lead on Huang before going up 9-5. Huang showed her resiliency, battling through long rallies to stave off four match points to tie things up at 9-9. Huang held serve to go up 10-9 and then broke Rozite for the win, securing the Eagle shutout and improving her overall singles record to 15-12 on the year.

The Eagles return to the court at 1 p.m. (CST) on Wednesday to take on eighth-seeded Westmont.
