DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The second ranked Embry-Riddle women's soccer team closed out its home conference slate with a 3-0 win against South Carolina Beaufort, Sunday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. Prior to kick off on Sunday, which was designated Senior Day, seniors
Gabriela Casariego,
Katherine Ebbs,
Maggie Maier and
Dana Robins were honored with their families.
"Today was a special day as we honored our four seniors," ERAU Head Coach
Samantha Bohon commented. "It was nice to be able to play each of them, which isn't always the case, and we just thank them for all that they've done for our program."
In the first 45 minutes, the Eagles dominated the Sand Sharks offensively, limiting the visiting team's possession, while creating several chances to get on the scoreboard. The Blue and Gold outshot USCB 14-1 in the first frame, including attempts by
Isabelle Haaranen and
Julia Karlernas that banged off the cross bar. However, the Eagles were unable to find the goal they were looking for as the six shots that were on target, were stopped by USCB goalkeeper Chelsie Mummert, resulting a 0-0 tie at the break.
The first 25 minutes of the second half featured more of the same with the Eagles creating chances but not being able to convert. USCB managed to get through the Eagle offense in the 65th minute but Poppy Miller's shot was corralled by
Olivia Lynch and the scoreless tie was extended.
With 17 minutes remaining in the contest, the Eagles finally broke the stalemate. After making a few dangerous runs through the midfield and down the left side, Andrea Frøshaug was brought down just outside the 18-yard box.
Kristin Sverrisdottir took the resulting free kick and, as two of the U.S. Air Force's F-16 Thunderbirds performing in this weekend's Wings and Waves Airshow flew over the field, she rocketed a shot into the upper left corner to put the Eagles up 1-0.
Their first score was what the Eagles needed to lift the seemingly invisible shield from the goal as they scored two more in quick succession. Playing out of the back
Emmie Johansson sent a long cross out to
Annie Gelnaw on the right side in the 79th minute. Gelnaw's speed allowed her race past the USCB defender and into the box where she completed a pass to Frøshaug who netted her team-high 12th goal of the season for a 2-0 Eagle advantage.
The third goal came less than two minutes later when Frøshaug found Karlernas making an overlapping run on the left side. Karlernas' cross made its way to an unmarked
Emmie Johansson who slotted her third goal of the season past Mummert to seal the win.
"I thought our team played a little bit better than we did on Friday night," Bohon observed. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to finish some of our chances. Part of that had to do with the USCB keeper who made some really good saves, but I also think we weren't as sharp as we needed to be in the final third because we could have opened this game up a little bit more."
Mummert finished with nine saves for the Sand Sharks who now stand at 4-9 overall in 4-5 in conference play.
The Eagles, who are now 11-1 overall and 6-0 in The Sun Conference, will step aside from conference play on Wednesday when they host sixth-ranked Lindsey Wilson in a 5 p.m. match at the ERAU Soccer Stadium.
