DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The second-ranked Embry-Riddle women's soccer team earned its seventh conference win of this season with a 2-0 victory over Thomas, Saturday at the Night Hawks' home field. Saturday's game, which included the engagement of one of the Thomas seniors as part of their Senior Day festivities, saw the Blue and Gold improve to 13-1 overall and 7-0 in Sun Conference play, while Thomas fell to 9-6 and 5-2 in the league.
The Blue and Gold went on the attack immediately, registering two shots and a corner kick within the first minute and a half of play. While the Night Hawks were able to keep the Eagles off the board, they were not able to mount much of an offense and their only shot attempt was collected by ERAU netminder
Olivia Lynch.
The Eagles finally got the goal they were looking for in the 26th minute.
Andrea Froshaug won a one-on-one battle on the left side and took the ball into the box where she rifled a shot off toward the far post. Froshaug's attempt went off the post, but fell into the path of
Nina Joergensen and the unmarked sophomore deposited the rebound into the lower right corner to give the Blue and Gold a 1-0 lead.
Although the Eagles outshot Thomas 15-1 in the first frame, they were not able to ripple the net again and carried the 1-0 lead into the intermission.
In the second frame, ERAU continued to move the ball around the pitch and run at the Thomas defense and just 19 seconds into the half,
Kristin Sverrisdottir got off a header that forced Sara-Ann Hartley to come up with a save.
Thomas threatened in the 55th minute when Jenny Hernandez pounced on an Eagle miscue and found herself in a one-v-one situation with Lynch, but the ERAU junior came off her line to deny Hernandez the goal-scoring opportunity and the Eagles went back to work in search of another goal.
Midway through the second half,
Isabelle Haaranen was subbed for a brief rest. She returned to the game at the 74:01 mark and one minute and 18 seconds later, she gave the Eagles a two-goal lead. Haaranen collected the ball on the left side, dribbled through a pair of defenders and hit a shot that Hartley managed to stop, but she wasn't able to hold on to the ball and Haaranen collected the rebound and tapped in her 10th goal of the year to seal the win.
"Julie [Orlowski] always does a good job of having her team ready against us," ERAU Head Coach
Samantha Bohon said. "In our series, we've never had an easy game, so we certainly didn't expect one today. I thought once the game settled down, we did a good job of moving the ball quickly and keeping possession. Our final pass was really off today and that hurt us. Fortunately, we kept battling and pressing forward. We knew we needed a result today and the team did what it took against a scrappy opponent. It was a good week for us against two very different styles of playing, so we hope this will make us better as we close out regular season next weekend.
"I also want to congratulate Emily Ingram on getting engaged during the pre-game ceremony. In my 14 years of coaching, I've never seen that happen and it was pretty cool. We wish them the best!"
The Eagles will play their next game on the road on Friday when they travel to Babson Park to take on Webber International at 5 p.m.
