BOSTON, Mass. - The NAIA II No. 13 Embry-Riddle men's basketball team had to wait 50 minutes past the scheduled start time against the University of Maine at Fort Kent, but the delay didn't seem to bother the Eagles as ERAU scored 114 points in a 53-point rout of the Bengals on Friday evening. The game, played at Fecteau-Leary Gymnasium, home site of the Fisher Falcons, was the first time the Eagles (3-0) scored 100 points in back-to-back contests (ERAU downed Florida College, 101-74 on Tuesday) since the beginning of the 2007-08 season. The Bengals (0-1) couldn't stop an Eagle team that shot 55 percent from the floor, including 16-for-26 from three-point range, while ERAU racked up 36 assists, the second-most in program history.
The Blue and Gold takes on Fisher on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. in the Eagles' final road game in the Bay State.
Embry-Riddle had six players in double-figures, including a career-high from
Hudson Cadet as the senior scored 18 points on seven field goals and four free throws. Cadet's 18 were a game-high, while
Daniel Kiesling (15),
Reed Ridder (14),
Brandon Serle (12),
Joseph Gonzalez (12) and
Cesar Pastrana (11) also reached double-figures for the Blue and Gold.
The game, scheduled for a 7 p.m. start, didn't begin until 7:50 p.m. due to a lack of referees, but neither squad seemed to mind as the two teams battled back-and-forth over the first few minutes as the Eagles held on to a 16-14 lead with 13:39 left. Kiesling was a big part of the Eagles' offensive outburst in the opening minutes, connecting on three straight threes to open the ERAU scoring, finishing the half with four triples in four attemplts.
Following an Eagle timeout, the Blue and Gold went on a 16-2 lead to open up a 32-16 advantage. The run started with a pair of Cadet free throws, followed by a Cadet dunk and
Dalton Barnes layup.
The Eagle defense ratcheted up the pressure, leading to a Cadet fastbreak dunk with just over 11 minutes left.
Gonzalez had a hand in nine straight Eagle points over a three-minute span, capped by a pair from the charity stripe with 4:11 left as the Eagles enjoyed a 41-27 lead.
After two free throws by David Martinez with a little more than three minutes remaining in the period, the Eagles ended the half on a 10-2 run thanks to three consecutive treys from
Jason Powell and Serle before Cadet punctuated the scoring with an easy lay in from
Brian Johnson as the Eagles took a 52-31 cushion into the break.
Embry-Riddle didn't slow down after halftime, racing out to a 14-2 run that put the game out of reach as ERAU led 66-35 after a Ridder triple.
Embry-Riddle went up by 45 at the 11:42 mark when Cadet flushed one home after recording a steal and running a solo fastbreak to give the Eagles an 81-36 lead.
Andy Schleitwiler put the Eagles in front by 50 with his second three of the night with 2:08 left and
Eddie Gray, playing in his first game in an Embry-Riddle uniform, ended the ERAU scoring with his own long range jumper to account for the 114-61 final.
DeForest Carter nearly had a double-double sans points, registering eight assists and eight rebounds with four steals while Powell dished out six assists and both Johnson and Barnes each had four helpers.
ERAU grabbed 56 rebounds to the Bengals' 23, paced by Carter's eight and both Pastrana and Serle had seven boards.
ERAU's 114 points were the most for the Eagles since 116 against Trinity (Fla.) on Nov. 19, 2007.
The Eagles forced 21 turnovers and turned those into 29 points while collecting double-digit steals for the third straight game.
