AT A GLANCE
After capturing the first wins of the 2014 season last weekend in Lakeland, the third-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles look to claim their first wins at Sliwa Stadium with a three-game Sun Conference series against rival University of South Carolina Beaufort. The Eagles (2-5, 2-1) are out of first place in The Sun Conference for the first time since Feb. 19, 2010 as Thomas is 3-0 in TSC play after a sweep of Florida Memorial last weekend.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Eagles have struggled offensively in the early-going of the season, recording just 27 runs in seven games, while the Sand Sharks are averaging 8.4 runs per contest. The middle innings haven't been kind to ERAU as the Eagles have scored just one run in the 4th-6th innings, while USCB has plated 20 runs in those same frames.
The Eagles finally broke into the win column last weekend, winning two of three games against Southeastern in Lakeland, Fla. Embry-Riddle is still struggling offensively, posting just a .226 team batting average in seven games with only eight extra-base hits and a .272 slugging percentage. J Rhet Montana started all three games last weekend at third base, going 6-for-15 with a pair of doubles while scoring three runs. Kevin Lindheim leads the team with 11 hits and 13 total bases to go along with five walks while Darryl Knight paces the squad with six RBIs and eight base on balls.
The Eagle arms seemed to find a groove against the Fire, lowering the team ERA to 3.34, highlighted by several nice performances, including Stetson Nelson, Daniel Poncedeleon and David Lidyard. Nelson earned his first win of the year on Saturday and now has an ERA of 0.69 with 10 strikeouts, while Poncedeleon has thrown 12.0 innings, allowing just two runs with a team-high 15 strikeouts. Lidyard got the win in Friday's 13-inning marathon win over SEU and in four appearances has a 0.79 ERA with 13 Ks and just two walks.
SCOUTING USCB
USCB comes to Daytona with a 4-1 overall record and 2-1 mark in The Sun Conference. The Sand Sharks won their conference opening series against Webber International last weekend before having a doubleheader with Voorhees (S.C.) rained out during the week.
USCB is hitting .352 as a team, led by senior Blake Cilwick and his .571 average, 12 hits, five doubles, eight RBIs and .810 slugging percentage. Cilwick, a 2013 second team All-TSC performer, has scored seven runs and boasts a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in right field. Jon Andrews is hitting .500 for USCB on eight hits with seven RBIs while shortstop Ashly Morris has seven hits and six RBIs.
The Sand Shark pitching staff has held opponents to just 12 earned runs in five games for a 2.63 ERA. Junior Delatorre has been the star of the staff thus far, owning a 1-0 record in two starts, tossing 12.0 innings without allowing an earned run while striking out eight batters.
THE #ERAUvsUSCB SERIES
In what has become one of the best rivalries in The Sun Conference, the Eagles and Sand Sharks have played 22 times since 2009 with the Eagles winning 15 of those meetings. Last season, ERAU went 5-1 against the Sand Sharks, including a pair of wins in The Sun Conference Tournament. The Sand Sharks have won at least one game in each of the five regular season series with the exception of 2013 when Embry-Riddle went to Hardeeville, S.C. and swept the Sand Sharks for the first time ever. The teams are tied 3-3 at Sliwa Stadium.
