AT A GLANCE
NAIA No. 3 Embry-Riddle travels to Alabame to square off against NCAA II Stillman in a trio of contests beginning on Saturday with a doubleheader and concluding with a single game on Sunday. The Eagles are coming off a sweep of the University of South Carolina Beufort last weekend in Daytona, while Stillman has dropped five straight contests. The two teams are meeting for the first time.
EMBRY-RIDDLE
The Eagles evened their season record at 5-5 last weekend thanks in large part to dominating pitching from the Embry-Riddle arms, beginning with
Daniel Poncedeleon's complete game gem on Friday night and continuing with
Stetson Nelson's shutout in Saturday's first game followed by
Corey Tufts and
Clayton Wagner combining for a one-hitter in the series finale. Against the Sand Sharks, the Eagle pitching staff allowed three runs and nine hits while striking out 26 USCB batters.
From the plate, the Eagles were led by junior outfielder
Liam Goodall as the Nanaimo, British Columbia native raised his batting average by nearly 90 points, going 6-for-12 with four RBIs and two runs scored. For his efforts, Goodall earned his first-ever Sun Conference Player of the Week nod.
Goodall is third on the team with a .293 batting average as
Kevin Lindheim (.325) and
J Rhet Montana (.308) pace the squad. Lindheim and Goodall each have recorded 16 total bases while Goodall and
Darryl Knight are tied for the team lead with seven RBIs. The Eagles' starting catcher, Knight is first on the team with a .422 on-base percentage, drawing a team-leading 10 walks.
Nelson boasts a season ERA of 0.42 in three starts and 21.2 innings, issuing just two walks with 16 Ks. Opponents average just .147 against the junior lefty, while teams are hitting just .167 against Poncedeleon. The senior transfer has collected 25 strikeouts in 21.0 innings with a 1.71 ERA in three starts.
Ronnie Lozada and
Clayton Wagner each have a save for the Blue and Gold.
SCOUTING STILLMAN
The Tigers enter the weekend series at 3-7, losers of five straight, including Wednesday's 6-3 loss on the road to Montevallo. Stillman, coached by Donny Crawford in his 10th season, have hit the ball pretty well, holding a .274 average as a team, but have struggled on the mound with a team ERA of 5.59.
SC boasts five players with averages above .300, including Paul Winterbottom who leads the squad with a .385 average from the dish on 15 hits, three doubles and five RBIs. Brad Sevenish and Fernando Tanaka each have 10 hits for the Tigers and have started in all 10 games.
Tyler Simmons has been the Tigers' workhorse early in the season, posting a 2-2 record in 23.0 innings with a 3.91 ERA. Daniel Sharpe is 1-1 with a 9.54 ERA in two starts, while Joseph Falletta is 0-1 with a 10.50 ERA in two appearances.
THE #ERAUvsSC SERIES
Although this weekend will mark the first-ever meeting between the Eagles and Tigers, Embry-Riddle has recorded an 18-9 all-time record against teams from the state of Alabma. The last time ERAU played in Alabama, Eagles began the 2012 season in Montgomery where they finished 2-2 against Auburn-Montgomery, Southern Poly and Tennessee Wesleyan.
