AT A GLANCE
The third-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles open their 2014 home schedule Tuesday by hosting non-conference rival Brewton-Parker in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. The Eagles (0-2) fell in a pair of non-conference extra-inning games on Saturday to Webber International (4-3, 11 inn.) and 24th-ranked William Carey (9-7, 10 inn.). The Eagles will be trying to avoid history in the first game as ERAU has never started 0-3 in program history.
As a team, the Eagles are hitting .247 in their first two contests of the year, led by
Liam Goodall's five hits and
Kevin Lindheim's four. The pair scored five of the team's 10 runs last weekend while newcomer
Darryl Knight accounted for four RBIs with his grand slam in the William Carey game.
The Eagle pitching staff had a rough day on Saturday, giving up 13 runs (10 earned) on 20 hits while walking 12 batters. A pair of Eagles had nice outings for the Blue and Gold as
Stetson Nelson tossed six innings against Webber International, allowing just one unearned run on six hits while striking out six. Newcomer
Daniel Poncedeleon also pitched well for the Eagles on Saturday, fanning seven batters in 5.2 innings while allowing just four hits.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
New faces for the Eagles dot the 2014 roster as 19 newcomers have joined the Embry-Riddle squad. 15 returners and five position starters are back for the Blue and Gold, including preseason All-American
Stetson Nelson and 2013 All-Conference performers
Jordan Johnson,
Kevin Lindheim and
Kyle Chastain.
Lindheim is currently on a nine-game on-base streak stretching back to the 2013 season, as well as a four game hitting streak.
Of the last six meetings between the Eagles and Barons, five have been decided by three or less runs. Last season, the two teams split two meetings in Mount Vernon, Ga.
SCOUTING BREWTON-PARKER
Brewton-Parker opens its 2014 season in Daytona Beach today after going 23-22 overall last year and 14-12 in the Southern States Athletic Conference. Greg Mullins is in his seventh season with the Barons and is 5-7 against the Eagles in his tenure.
Eddie Peyton is the top returning hitter for BPC, recording a .312 average, 48 hits and 33 runs as a junior. Peyton stole 14 of the Barons' 37 bases in 2013 while Jacob Bogaards hit .282 with 37 hits and 18 RBIs as a junior.
Left-hander Kory Brooker went 3-3 with a 2.30 ERA in 47.0 innings last season, striking out 54 batters and posting a .211 opponent batting average. Jeremy Coram is also back for BPC after going 7-4 with a 3.03 ERA in a team-leading 89.0 innings of work. Coram struck out 61 batters and recorded five complete games in 2013.
THE ERAU VS. BPC SERIES
The Eagles and Barons have met 36 times in the last 25 years. Embry-Riddle holds a 26-10 all-time series advantage and has won four of the last six contests.
Randy Stegall and Greg Mullins have squared off 12 times in the last seven years with ERAU holding a slim 7-5 lead in those games.
