DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Daniel Poncedeleon outdueled fellow ace Anthony Seblano on Friday night as the third-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles cruised to an 8-0 shutout of the visiting Northwood Seahawks in the series opener at Sliwa Stadium. The Eagles (17-10, 12-1) stretched their Sun Conference winning streak to 10 games while Northwood (14-9-1, 2-5) managed just three total hits in the loss.

The two teams meet again tomorrow, Saturday, March 15 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

Poncedeleon got a inning-ending double play to end the first inning, and neither he nor Seblano faced any danger until the Eagles mounted a threat in the fourth.

Darryl Knight tripled on an 0-2 Seblano pitch, taking the ball to deep left center to lead off the bottom of the fourth. J Rhet Montana brought in the first run of the game with an RBI ground out before Jordan Johnson doubled and moved to third on an error, setting up another RBI opportunity for Liam Goodall. The junior outfielder lifted a ball down the right field line that found fair territory, pushing across Johnson for a 2-0 Eagle lead.

Poncedeleon struck out a pair of Seahawks in the fifth before a foul out ended the frame and the Eagles took command of the contest with a three-run fifth as Kyle Chastain, Kevin Lindheim and Montana all collected RBI singles for a 5-0 Blue and Gold cushion.

Poncedeleon retired nine consecutive Seahawks during the middle of the game, keeping the Embry-Riddle lead at five runs until giving way to David Lidyard in the eighth. Lidyard faced the minimum before the home team struck for three more runs in the last of the inning as Goodall, Hunter Bruehl and Jake Cavender drove in a run each for an 8-0 advantage.

Bruce Wong worked around a base hit and two walks to strand three NU baserunners in the ninth, ending the game with a strikeout of Noel Garcia.

Poncedeleon (4-1) earned his third straight win in a seven-inning outing, fanning seven on 104 pitches.

Eight of the nine Eagle starters recorded a hit in the game, led by Cavender's 3-for-5 performance and Goodall's 3-for-4 with two RBIs contest. Both Montana and Goodall accounted for two RBIs while Johnson scored twice.
